Putting an album on your list that you haven't even bought yet? Sounds pretty damn sketchy to me.

this is a really fantastic record, all the way through, and it's one of the rare ones (that i can remember off the top of my head, at least) where the second half is stronger and catchier than the first ... on a lot of records you kind of just get used to the sound and the hooks and by the second half you get a little bored ... in this one, the whole thing just grows on you

let me rephrase:

i am guessing that (once i buy it and digest it) i will like it and it will probably be on my "best of the year" list ... i'm basing that on their previous albums and what i've read about this one ... but maybe i'll hate it or not get into it, i dunno

but i do know that everyone here agrees that they're fantastic live, right rhett?

Not to be contrary, but I though the first half was great and the second have went downhill. I think Bags agreed with me.

i'll admit i haven't listened to even a fourth of your original list, but some possible nods to the following (at least in your honorable mention set, if not atop the heap):

 kraftwerk-minimum/maximum live set
 swervedriver comp-juggernaut rides
the new eno cd-another day on earth
 stones-a bigger bang
 rtx-transmaniacon (tailend of 2004)
 x-live in LA

but thanx for the daunting list of stuff i should at least try to track down and hear a song or two from...where to begin?!

I liked these records quite a bit...
 Dead Meadow -- Feathers
 Bloc Party -- Silent Alarm
Shout Out Louds -- Howl Howl Gaff Gaff
 Constantines -- Tournament of Hearts

I also really enjoyed Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary, the live Queens of the Stone Age - Over the Years and through the woods, Beck - Guero, and Frances the Mute by the Mars Volta.  And I can't stop listening to the new Living Things record Ahead of the Lions.  Just a few off the top of my head.

yeah Hoya, does your journo status get you access to promos, do you borrow liberally from friends, or did you actually buy all those CDs....?

a little bit of all of that ... i'd say i bought about 15 of those in CD format (maybe more?), got a bunch more (15? 20?) via emusic, maybe 10 promos, and the rest are stolen

Not ready to make a list yet, but I'd throw The Dead 60's on there and De Novo Dahl, but you're all probably just deferring that one to Kosmo.

1. The National: Alligator
I have tried and tried and tried with this album I do not see the greatness that most other people ascribe to it....I much prefer Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers
