 Like everyone else surrounding Michael, they probably do exactly what he says, as long as those checks keep coming in.

It happened again and again -- the lawyer was behind them during the whole interview, and kept stopping questions as they verged into all kinds of territory.  But, as you can see from the transcript, he also let a hell of a lot of questions go answered (in their whacked-out way).
