forcing myself to like a band
« on: November 08, 2007, 04:02:00 pm »
it is weird.  devendra banhart and the tiny masters of today.  so much press, so much coolness associated with them, one would think they are the new nirvana, the new run-dmc of a musical movement mainstream that must be mass followed by those "who know their shit."  i listened . . . and paused . . . and listened, and was like, wtf--this is considered music?  but these people are cool, correct?  did i want be cool, too?  it was the same thing back in 1990 when i first heard sonic youth, because all the underground cool kids loved them, and i thought they sucked ass biscuits.  now i worship them as a revolution.  my point is, that after repeated listening to devendra and the tiny tater-tots, i like it.  i forced myself to like it.  was it wrong?  is cool wrong?

X was a band I really had to force myself to like, I couldn't stand John Doe and Exene's vocals initially, but the more I heard them together, the more sense it made. I also had started off with their first 2 LP's, and I discovered "Under the Big Black Sun" and "The New World" and those are probably my 2 favorites.

I've had several friends that I consider to have great taste in music that have tried to get me into Devandra. It just bores me. I don't get the hype at all. That said, if someone digs it, I'm glad DB is there for em.

Maybe I'll download a disc or 2 from one of the oink replacements and give him an honest shot.

I did the same thing with The Hold Steady.  Although, I should have taken to them immediately because their style is what I like.  I had to listen to Boys & Girls for well over a month.  I couldn't stand Separation Sunday when it first came out but I like it now.

That's crazy someone mentioned X.  I just listed to the Los Angeles reissue yesterday.  There are a few songs on there I like and a few on Under the Big Black Sun.  I can't force myself to like X as much as most of the cool kids.

OK I listened to part of Cripple Crow and still think he sounds like a cross between a watered down Wooden Wand and a watered down Ben Chasny.

Both those guys are exponentially better and more original and haven't gotten nearly the same amount of press. Damn shame.

I still don't like Hold Steady, and after repeated attempts, I don't like Ted Leo either.

TVOTR was a band I had to put a decent amount of time into and eventually was satisfied that I did.

Yeah, we posted an interview with Rob last night with a link to the album stream, after 4 songs I was bored out of my mind.  Svet assured me it got better as the album went on but I haven't given it another go yet.

Devendra on the other hand, is a God to me.  Listen to Seahorse off the new record.  I had to pull over to the side of the road the first time I listened to it, it was just too beautiful to handle.  Took me a little while to get into him though, which often happens with really original music, I've listened to stuff and been like "man, I'm going to really love this after like 5 listens when I actually get it"
