I'm goin' on Friday.  Looking forward to it like mad.

Anyone driving there from the district?  Just though I'd ask...

Also, tips on the bandstand?  i've only seen shows in their main stage area.  My understanding is there's a dance floor you can weasel your way into and thus not line up at 8pm for a seat and crappy dinner.

 hmm.

i'm going both nites, so i'm hoping stephin and co. switch it up a bit. as for not having to get there early, it's still a seated show even though it's in the bandstand. but in the birchmere vs. 930 thread someone posted an e-mail saying it was seated, but with no tables. so i guess if people want to eat, they have to use their knees as a table.

since it's all seated and the bandstand is pretty small and i don't want to sit around the birchmere for hours and hours before the show, i'm going to probably get there closer to 10 than 8. we'll see what kind of seat/view that gets me. i'll report back tomorrow.

Does he still have the hearing issues so that the show has to be insanely quiet?

wow, last nite's show was really great. i'm not a huge fan of "i" but after seeing them play almost exclusively "69 love songs" tunes the last four times i've seen them, it was nice to get a change of pace. they played exactly 90 minutes, about 25 songs, 1/3 from the new album, 1/3 from "69 love songs," and 1/3 various other stuff, including an excellent back-to-back of "swinging london" and "smoke and mirrors." stephin was in a very playful mood, which was nice. he played yukelele exclusively, claudia played piano, sam was on cello and john switched off between guitar and banjo. even on the synth-heavy older stuff this arrangement worked well, just a really pristine sound.

it was sort of a theater set up, all seated but there were no tables. hard to believe how empty it was last nite, at least a couple hundred empty seats. got there around 945 or so and still got a relatively great seat, although i doubt that will be the case tonite. for the person who asked about stephin's hearing problems, he did mention them once, asking that when people applauded that they refrain from whistling because that's really painful for him. one annoying thing was that since it was a pretty quiet show, every time someone came out of the bathroom you could hear a bit of flushing. not cool, but not much you can do. very much looking forward to round 2 tonite.

Years back when Go records would do that outdoor show in Virginia they played there.  The level (all the rest were loud rock bands) was conversational.  But the audience was quiet and it worked.  From what I understand loud noises are painful for him and so it is really quiet.  If it does get too loud (such as if some jerk kept whistling) then he supposedly would often leave and not play.
