NME #1 album prediction
« on: December 05, 2005, 12:24:00 pm »
The end of the year issue is coming out next week. Any speculation on which album will get the coveted #1 slot? I spend entirely too much time wondering what it might be, but it's an annual ritual. .

A couple months ago, I would've argued that Kaiser Chiefs would've gotten it, but it seems like their star might be fading somewhat. They seem to love Franz's new album, but I can't imagine them giving it to the same band two years in a row. They loved Hard-Fi, Maximo Park and Antony, but those seem too new. If Arctic Monkeys had an album out, I'm sure they'd get it since NME is so impressed with how these guys came on (and I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to think out of the box and name the downloaded album as #1).

The last couple years I've been able to pick it without too much problem, since it wasn't too tough to figure out that Franz, the White Stripes "Elephant" and the Strokes debut would get it. Was surprised that Coldplay got it for Rush of Blood, and noone could've predicted Queens of the Stone Age in 2000.

Anyway, that's a lot of rambling. What will NME pick as #1? My guess is still going to be Kaiser Chiefs, though I wouldn't be surprised to see Arcade Fire, Kasabian or Franz get it.

There's some  mild controversy over the compilation of this year's list. Don't read the article if you want to guess the top pick first. (Article gives away #1 and #2.) I don't know why it's news. I thought everyone already knew those NME lists were subject to other interests/choices. They are still entertaining, though.

Oh yeah, I forgot about them. The singer has been kind of a knob in interviews though, and it seemed like the staff had kind of turned against them. I swear, when those guys dislike someone (Placebo, Stereophonics), they are brutal. But Silent Alarm did get a lot of acclaim, they made a good enough splash over here, and NME likes their style.

And kurosawa, I'm going to try and hold off on reading that article, even though I'm totally itching to.

Being a UK publication, yes that's what they're going on.

Am surprised that they didn't include Wrens' Meadowlands, as they've been creaming over that one lately (another one that was just released over there). And they should've included My Morning Jacket's new one.

me too.   :(

It was good to see Kate Bush's new album make the list, as well as We are Scientists and Antony & the Johnsons (who really are as good as everybody says they are).

i thought US pubs went by original release dates (especially for UK albums) for their year-end list
