FAO Hoya....
« on: March 07, 2006, 12:19:00 am »
Whatever happened to your unedited editions of the Metro Express? (Sorry if I twisted up the name.) I miss them.

Don't let Callat703 show you up with his scoops.    :p

Screw those who don't want to read either of your works. They can just skip over them and not read them at all. There are plenty of us here, I assume, who do really appreciate it and like to read them. You two should post your works just for us. Personally, I don't ever have the opportunity to take the DC Metro so I've never even seen the print editions. Besides, I like reading the unedited versions.

 My 2 cents.

thanks for the vote of encouragement!

actually, Express is moving in another direction for their weekend listings and reprinting the stuff that runs in the Washpost Proper for their Friday section (my last column was in january) ... but I'm still writing longer pieces for Thursday's Weekend Pass (wrote about the Deftones last week, working on a Marah piece for this week) ... I'll start posting em

i thought the whole point of the express was to appeal to a different crowd, hence music/arts/culture writers that didn't typically write for the post and its weekend section? why the change?

and yes, please post your articles here cuz i never read the express!

i'd rather not speculate about internal stuff publicly, and i really think they're just going in a different direction

i haven't actually been taking the metro regularly lately, and haven't been reading express as much, but i know they've always reprinted bits and pieces of stuff from the post, and they (at least used to) run the got plans column on fridays, which ends up overlapping a lot with the stuff that I and the other club picks writer (we would alternate fridays) would cover ... i just took a look at last friday's express online and they had a really cool full-page listing of all sorts of stuff, i think it works really well

all said, express does a really good job covering local goings-on and appealing to the "different crowd" you talk about ... and they change their format a lot, which helps the paper stay fresh

"...going in a different direction..."

That's right up there with "...leaving to spend more time with my family..." on the list of doublespeak.

hah! touche, ggw, touche

well, like i said, i'd really rather not speculate (because that's all it would be doing, speculating) about the internal workings over there, but i really just think they're retooling the section ... and i know i'm still contributing articles, and that's fine by me

If someone could find the magic bean that plucks a band from relative obscurity and provides them with the trappings of mainstream success, they could make a bundle in the music industry. Is non-stop touring the answer? Cultivating grassroots support? A helping hand from insiders?

Philadelphia roots-rock group Marah, playing at Iota on Sunday, has tried it all. Championed for nearly a decade by influential artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Steve Earle, and fawned over by rock-crit intelligentsia like David Fricke and Nick Hornby, Marah has no shortage of powerful friends. Even horror mastermind Stephen King counts them as ??the best rock band that nobody knows.?

Led by fractious brothers Dave and Serge Bielanko, it??s easy to see why heavyweight fans have lined up behind Marah. The band brings a refreshingly laid-back approach to their music. Direct and unpretentious, they strip rock and roll music down to its essential elements and supply heaping doses of boisterous country-rock tunes and unhurried gut-wrenching numbers.

Marah??s fifth and latest LP, last year??s ??If You Didn??t Laugh You??d Cry,? may be the best the band has recorded. Recorded live in the studio for a magnificent unbuttoned effect, the group finally distilled the fervent spirit of their intimate gigs onto an album.

As King alluded to, however, the A-list admirers have not yet helped Marah score a hit record and widespread recognition. Perhaps not hip enough for the indie kids and simply lacking the narrow sound rock radio looks for, the group still makes endless trips around the country performing to their faithful fan base on the club circuit.

Be thankful, though, that you can still see Marah at a cozy venue like Iota; it may not be much longer before they catch that elusive break.

For a veteran band finally catching some breaks, Matt Pond PA??s current tour couldn??t have started with a worse omen. After making the short trek from their home base in Brooklyn to play Manhattan??s Bowery Ballroom, thieves broke into their van and stole almost all of their gear.

??We were blown away, couldn??t believe it,? sighed frontman Matt Pond during a day-long drive from Phoenix to Dallas. ??But we dealt with it well, borrowed and bought all our stuff, and made it to Boston to play a show the next day.?

Stolen instruments and a balky tour van, however, aren??t about to slow down Matt Pond PA, who headline an early show at 9:30 Club on Saturday. With a critically acclaimed new album and a high-profile placement on indie tastemaker teen drama The OC, the emotive chamber pop quintet is hitting their stride.

After years of struggling to make ends meet in the indie scene, Pond embraces the commercial breaks his group has earned. ??People think [indie] bands are supposed to operate without any money,? Pond said. ??If you lose all your money in this business and you lose a huge chunk of your life, it just doesn??t make sense.?

With Pond??s searching voice and brooding lyrics, Rolling Stone dubbed his group ??emo for grown-ups,? a tag Pond tries to play down. ??Critics will always have to say something,? he said. ??If Neil Young came out right now he??d be considered emo.?

Started in Philadelphia in 1998 (hence the PA), Matt Pond PA initially featured a revolving cast of musicians assisting Pond with his lush orchestrations. ??I started writing songs years ago with a bunch of people,? Pond recollected, ??but only in the last few years have I really considered this a band.?

Pond acknowledges how grueling life on the road can be and hopes that his current group sticks together, but affirms that he??s in this for the long haul. ??I like it, but I wouldn??t want to do or not do anything for someone else,? Pond laughed, ??which is why it??s just not possible to have a girlfriend.?

Let's see. Deftones. Marah. Matt Pond PA.

So instead of plugging already overhyped musical mediocrities, Hoya is aiming to champion UNDERhyped musical mediocrities. Let me guess, is next weeks article on the Minus Five?   :p
