I'm just pissed that the tour dates for many UK bands doesn't include DC as often as it should - another venue would have filled in that gap - yet Seth and co.  don't go the extra 100% or even allow a competing venue the chance.  Thankfully the Rock and Roll Hotel is willing and able to book up and coming new UK bands, the Black Cat's recent inability to book any band of major interest is terribly lacking - although the AUTECHRE and BRITISH SEA POWER show are definately on my must see list. [/QB]
You seem to contradict yourself.  You say DC has venues which are appropriate to book the bands you want to see - R&R Hotel and Black Cat - but they don't.  That's the fault of those venues, not the 9:30 Club.  If the band's are 'up and coming' and not capable of filling a club the size of 9:30, what's your f***ing problem with 9:30.

If you want DC to have generic generic corporate clubs with no community connection or history, you're being selfish.  I think we're lucky to have someone do things the right way and put up a fight against those interests.

So the people who want multiple people to have a stake in the area are selfish, but the forum gliterati who want only their hand chosen club in the District aren't selfish? Dictionary.com, bro.

I don't know 95% of the bands listed on this board, but if Seth can keep bringing shows like Live tonight, it makes the buying an extra ticket and paying $85 for 75 minutes worth of a great headliner worth it... I usually don't buy tickets to shows at all, and the 9:30 club is one of maybe 10 venues in the nation I will for... truth be told...

Speaking of truths, um, any truth to the rumour I was hearing at the club tonight about Matt Nathanson headlining later this year? that would rule..

There ARE other clubs in the area, which that guy aluded to.  That's why I didn't understand his argument.  We used to have the Bayou and it folded. Why hasn't a replacement emerged?  I think its the market.  DC isn't SF or NYC.  There's limited demand (we're just not that cool a town overall) and its good that demand is filled by cool places - 9:30, Black Cat, etc.  I read into it that that guy wanted the corporate clubs to come into DC to compete on ticket prices.  Which I called selfish which was really just a euphemism for I don't think he knew what the f**k he was talking about.

Brian Chippendale on the 930 stage? Now that will be a sight.

Or perhaps he'll play in the middle of the crowd?[/b]
man, now i'm really bummed that i'm missing this boredoms show now. black pus on the 930 stage will be unreal. azaghal, when i booked him at the velvet last year, chippendale actually did play on the stage and not on the floor, so i assume he'll do the same at the 930 (which has a policy that doesn't allow floor sets).

as for why UK (and other international and national) bands skip DC, the answer is more complicated than it seems. xneverwherex was partly right in her statement in that many of these bands only intend on playing a select few shows on their first trip here. but a large part of it is indeed the lack of interest local venues have shown for years in booking up-and-coming (read: unproven) bands. nobody wants to take a chance on an act that might not make a lot of money. both the 930 and black cat are guilty of this, but they do have a lot of overhead and astronomical rental fees to pay. the rock and roll hotel/dc9/red & black are all desperate venues looking to fill a schedule -- when not devoting nights to bullshit dance parties -- so their booker will take chances on stuff he might otherwise not (if we was able to control the market the way the black cat and 930 do).

i know most of the people reading this board could care less about the experimental/fringe shows i book at the velvet lounge, but at least i've been able to create a haven for these kinds of acts in dc (and it's not just avant-garde music...i booked uk indie-pop legends secret shine at the warehouse and '70s punk wreckless eric at the velvet). for years, there was nobody willing to book this sort of music -- much of which is highly acclaimed but aesthetically marginal so it won't "sell" -- but now there's a venue in town who will take a chance on something as long as it is artistically viable.

i'm not going to complain about it here since i used to work at the 930 club, but seth has the money to open a small club that could do something like this, but he has no interest. he's a wise businessman because he knows such an endeavor would barely make a profit. the bottom line is if you want to change the system, especially in this city, you gotta fight to do something about it. i did, but man, it takes a hell of a lot of energy.

You're killing me here.   :(
Sharon Kraus/United Bible studies and now this? I'm starting to think I picked the worst week to go to the UK.

And let's not forget about Allen/Richard Bishop at the black cat 2 nights prior.

what?!? the bishops are playing the black cat? what day? man, i had to book richard bishop at my fucking house in 2005 (90 people showed up) because the black cat wouldn't touch it. weird that they are doing the show now.

i'm missing the boredoms/black pus because i'm going to see van der graaf generator in the UK. and you get to see MBV. i don't think we have the right to complain.
