a buddy really digs these guys. I know nothing..Would you say they are more jammy than jazz-fusiony, or a combo...worth seeing?

i'd say they're closer to jazz-fusion than jam-band, but the label i'd attach to them is space rock (with elements of dub and trance too).  they always perform with a light show that turns the entire venue into a big psychedelic screen saver.  i enjoyed their last show at the state, but i enjoy 5-minute effects-ladden guitar solos and trippy keyboards
