Maybe we didn't care for it because it was held in the same arena the Supersonics play in, and the acoustics were terrible. Seem to remember liking them a lot more when the girl was on vocals and not the guys.

That would be the absolute worst place to see them.  Their sound really only works in small clubs.  Somehow they were on tour with the Chili Peppers a few years back playing sheds like Merriweather.  I'm sure that didn't endear many of the Peppers fans.

yeah, saw them open for sleater-kinney at hammerstein in ny and thought they were still good, but not really at their best.  their black cat shows in the past two years have been great.

that being said, where's the new material?  have I missed something, or has nothing been released since 'melody'?

and p.s. unctuous miller - the appeal...oh never mind.

Black Cat:
FRI MARCH 12- TRANS AM (cd release), 302 ACID (cd release) $10 mainstage 9:30

Any thoughts on Trans Am?  They've been on my "I-should-really-pick-something-up-by-them" list for a while, but I haven't done it yet.

Don't miss Will Johnson. You probably already know this, but...He's the prolific Centro-matic lead - also does South San Gabriel with Brent Best from Slobberbone - and, obviously, his own solo stuff.

He's quickly becoming one of my tops.

Let me know if you want a sampling of his tunes.

For a while I was thinking I saw him and did not like him, but when you said this I realized  I saw Mike Johnson.

You can get a good sampling of the music here:

  Will Johnson

Check out both songs featured for South San Gabriel - both very good &  Murder of Tides  on his solo record...also good.

for what it's worth - AMG lists GBV as a similar artist (to Centro-matic):
"Although for the most part Centro-Matic's sound draws from indie archetypes like Guided By Voices and Pavement, it reveals the band's roots in a Texas tradition of guitar-driven blues, country, and rock. During certain parts, the album quiets down to a beautiful, eerie mix of acoustic guitar and Wurlitzer organ or piano. But both the loud and the soft, the distorted and the purely acoustic, and the screaming and the whispering in Centro-Matic's music feel contaminated with a melancholy that is as alarming as it is compelling."
