I think that was a mistake on their part. As I'm sure The National will agree, you can get a lot of new fans if you open a bigger tour...
Yeah, that is just D-U-M. And judging by their 20-minute set at the RnR Hotel a few months ago, they don't quite have what it takes to headline on their own. A BMRC opening slot would've been a great way to ease into the US.

MON JULY 23- THE PONYS, JAY REATARD $10 backstage 9:00

poor ponys, relegated to the backstage only a few months after headlining the mainstage. fine by me, their backstage show back in 2005 was the best of the three times they've played at the black cat.

Sometimes, when you have (and support) a reputation that you're a club trashing band, you pretend like you're leaving a tour when you've actually been asked to leave a tour.

For the record, I know nothing about the band, but that was my first thought.

the club's stage isn't that big... how are they going to fit all the members of the spree on stage?  maybe they'll be playing with a smaller band (ex: less singers in the choir)?  have they played the club before?

Yeah.  The Polyphonic Spree and the TRachtenburg Family Slideshow Players did a gig at 9:30 a few years back.  It was one of the more....um...."unique"....shows.  The P-Spree all fit on the club's stage.  They put the choir on risers.

Wow - That is surprising.  They drew a decent crowd on the mainstage and put on a great show.

I loved their last 9:30 show. I was there with a couple people who never go to concerts, and we are all.. in the right state of mind. I thought it was great. But I kind of figured the Spree were done as a band, so I'm not rushing to get tix to this one.

So, I just noticed that Schoolyard Heroes are opening for The Horrors at the Rock and Roll Hotel show on June 8.  I would so be there if it weren't for the fact that I'll be seeing Tool that night in Baltimore.

I've heard good things about The Horrors, but still haven't checked them out at all.  When they left the tour with BRMC (to which I briefly considered going), I never thought they'd go find a kickass opener that would make me want to see them.  Perhaps I'll drive over to Philly the next night...
