 Blue Cheer
one particular Afghan Whigs show where Greg's combo of coke and booze just wasn't working

The Cars really blew live, talk about a band with zero personality live.  The Cardigans were really a disappointment several years back, should have stayed at home, put on the cd and giggled around the CD case.

I walked out of that one too, after about 4 songs. Part of it, I was exhausted, but I wasn't feeling it. And I'd had a blast at the previous 9:30 show.

The Rapture was another that I just did not get into, when I saw them at the BC (believe this was when the Jealous Lovers ep was out). We walked about halfway through.

one rapture show on the mainstage of BC, they played covers of both "rock and roll part 2" and ... some other cheesy song, that was just terrible. but when they played the backstage as a three-piece right after "out of the races" EP came out ... that was fantastic.

 I'm sure someone was there!

They were practically booed off the stage after arguing with the audience.  They looked like they were fresh from the salon.  Evan was throwing ice cubes at them from the left side balcony.  I remember a lot of us had our backs to the stage.  At some point, a guy ran on stage and whipped it out in front of Rob Thomas.

2 months later, they had a number one hit and were rock stars.  They sure didn't earn it that night.

The Lemonheads that night though, were excellent.
i was there. i don't remember any of those extra-curriculars but i do remember thinking, "who the fuck are these douches and why are they playing this show?" it really was all kinds of terrible. then when "push" started getting lots of play i was like, "oh man, not these douches."

the lemonheads and ben lee were pretty alright. was there another band before m20? i forget. [/b]
Maybe the 60 Foot Dolls?  It was them or Imperial Teen.  I wish MB20 could just be erased.

60 foot dolls, good call! impressive memory skills, DriveWay. there was a time in the late-90s when every third CD in a used CD store was that 60 foot dolls album. true story.

REM - Tibetan Freedom Festival, RFK 1998 -- Awful. Simply awful.

Spiritualized - 9:30 Club 2003-ish.  Masturbatory.  Simply masturbatory.

Chris Whitley - Iota 2003-ish.  Whitley was in la-la land.  Broke half a dozen strings before letting his guitar tech play the guitar while Whitley just mumbled unintelligibly into the mic for about 15-20 minutes.

Lee Perry - State Theatre 2007.  Mad genius as a producer; colossal mess as a performer.

I think the only thing that comes close for me would be Bob Dylan in Holmdel, NJ in 2003.  I dozed off at several points.  Although, it wasn't that he was terrible, it was that he was following a highly energetic, full band set from Tom Petty by doing a largely solo acoustic set.

That show was pretty damn weak.  Tjinder didn't look at the audience once.  They may as well have put the CD on and left the stage.

The opener was Citizen Cope?  He was pretty boring as well.

HBO was filming.  I'm sure it's floating around online somewhere.

Brian Jonestown Massacre one night backstage at the Black Cat.  The band phoned it in.  Anton wouldn't stop making fun of his bassist.  I thought for sure there would be a fight.

Back in Hawaii my friend saw them headline a poorly conceived rock festival called Poifest. They were bitched at, heckled, and argued with the mostly young angry Hawaiian crowd and Rob Thomas nearly took a beer bottle to his face. Not long afterwards they were inescapable and that was the last Poifest ever.

First time I heard of them, I was at a festival in Camden, NJ to see Cheap Trick and Beck.  As Cheap Trick were playing, an idiot friend of mine went to the side stage to check it out.  He came back covered in sweat, all wide-eyed, saying he had just seen the best live band ever, and that the pit was INSANE.  He told me it was Matchbox20, and it wasn't until I heard that terrible song on the radio that I realized exactly how much of an idiot he was/is.  I still give him a hard time for that, even years later.

Volcano Suns @ the old 9:30 club. The drummer was falling down drunk. I had just bought Bumper
Crop and was psyched. Man, they blew, and did I mention I had to drive 3 hrs one way for the pleasure.
