mashups
« on: February 27, 2005, 12:24:00 am »
Due my haven forsaken mainstream radio a number of years ago, I have just now stumbled upon a show on DC101 called Flounder's Mashups.  They stick whole rocks together with hip/hop or pop tracks.  Not just sampling of either, they play the entire vocals of the hip hop song over the entire rock song.  Some of these tracks sound really rather good and I'd love to know if anyone knows where I could get my hands on some of these.  Websites that host some mp3's?

Interestingly enough, as I was going through Amazon's site awhile ago, I saw this advertised on one of the side banners. Have no idea if what you are looking for is here but this may help you.

Arthways - I too heard some of this sound - a hip hop track played over top of a Chris Isaccs song - and I was quite taken with it .  In theory it seems pretty bad, but I think the top tracking improved the Isaac's stuff... XM radio, channel 22 is playing some of this stuff...hmmm, interesting, non?

No, and the Linkin Park/Jay-Z piece is a remix not a mashup;  but you COULD copywrite your unique and overwhelming form of sarcasm.  BTW:  We're sorry we're so late to discover this "deck" style which you obviously are already an expert on...sigh.

There's always been controversy. DJ's started scratchin' Was that 'music'? Rappers started samplin' What, that music?

Now we come to the culture of the remix taken to its ultimate end: the mash-up. The phenomenon has been around for well over a decade. Last year, though, a new controversy emerged when DJ Danger Mouse mashed Jay Z's Black Album with the Beatles' classic White Album. The result was The Grey Album. EMI records was not pleased. Too bad, really, because the Grey Album was a load of fun and could have been used to generate more interest in both Jay Z and the Beatles. It was a blast to hear "modern" music folded into an old favorite.

Oh well, cease & desist it is. Not that it mattered. Support for the concept resulted in a mass-download day dubbed Grey Tuesday.

So here we have a "legitimate" mash-up again featuring Jay-Z's stuff run headlong into Linkin Park.

I'm pretty well shocked at the results. While I'm a fan of Jay-Z, Linkin Park has mostly left me cold. So, like folks in those old Reece's Peanut Butter Cup ads, I'm blown away that these two things taste so great together. Jay-Z's rapping, which can have a cool sorta-swing to it, gives the Linkin Park material a huge lift. Right from the start, "Dirt Off Your Shoulder/Lying From You" just plain rocks. On its own, I get kinda bored with songs like "Lying From You" because of the monochromatic nature of the sound, the only dynamics coming from the quiet/loud juxtapositions. Add Jay-Z to the mix and Linkin Park's guitar sound explodes in proximity to his rhymes.

The combination of "Numb" and "Encore" is similarly impressive, while "Izzo" and "In The End" actually sound like they might have been written by the same artist. By the time I got to the closing "Points Of Authority/99 Problems/One Step Closer", that danged volume control had edged its way dangerously close to the ear damage region...and that is always a good sign.

Ten year old techniques?  Well, would that be a writer/journalist/blogger's opinion?  Frankly, it just shows how behind the times we all are on this website.  Experts might be happier elsewhere...like starting their own blogs.  Thanks for updating us.

I think the mashup of Smells Like Teen Spirit and Bootylicious is absolutely brilliant. It's been around for awhile and I have it on this weird compilation I ordered from Rough Trade a few years ago called the Best Bootleg Mix Ever or something like that. It's also got the Stroke of Genuis Strokes/Xtina mix, which I think is okay.

Just last night I downloaded a mashup of Beyonce's Crazy in Love and the Happy Monday's Step On. It works pretty well! If you use Limewire, just run a search on "vs." or on "mash" and you'll get more of these than you'd ever wanted.

There are mash-ups available all over the internet if you really want to spend time looking.  A great place to start is www.sixxmixx.com Its from some radio station that has a similar show to the one on DC101.  You can download the whole show plus a bunch of individual mash-ups. I really liked Daft Punk vs. Queen in "Another One Bites da Funk".

 Then you should check out:
-http://www.jay-zeezer.com/  For the Black and Blue Album
-http://halley.lunarpages.com/~djbc002/beastles/ Beatles mixed with Beastie Boys, its pretty good and the site has links to lots more mashups

NinjaMaster, willard and Relaxer:  Thanks - seriously - for bringing more of this to our attention.  I have just one question which I'm hoping YOU guys can answer:  What is the difference between remixing and mashups?

There's a rather good one that mixes "Blvd of Broken Dreams", "Wonderwall", and "Writing To Reach You"...it's nice becuase all three are essentially the same song.

A remix is adding new elements to or extending an existing song.  i.e. U2 uses remixers all the time to make thier songs dance floor friendly.  Sampling is adding bits of other songs into ones production.  i.e. The Beastie Boys or Pop Will Eat Itself.  A mashup is the melding of two completely different tracks.   Because the acapella version of rap tracks are widely available it's easier to graft on to rock song.

Me thinks that mashups are all a bit 2002... Plus, it aint't really a great mashup until they force you to burn the master tapes, which ABBA forced the KLF to do.  KLF/The Jams were doing "mashups" in late 80s, their most famous single "Doctorin' the Tardis" incorporated samples from Gary Glitter, Sweet, and the theme to Dr. Who.

Call it a parody or a mashup, but Beatallica is probably one of the best out there.  If only because it was done by actually musicians and not by someone sitting in front of a computer.

Agreed its one of things that while clever for awhile has now been done to death... especially when it gets aired on the radio and comps are released... for.  For DJ Dangermouse it was the prefect way to get his name out there and get paid for other works.
