No, man, professional journalist.

I haven't been this proud since my 90-year-old next-door neighbor gave me a piece of pie after I helped her carry some heavy stuff up the stairs, cementing my status as a professional athlete.

Music fest issue enters Vineland campaign
 Thursday, January 24, 2008

 By TIM ZATZARINY Jr.
 Gannett News Service
 VINELAND

As the volume rises on local residents' opinions of the Vineland Music Festival, mayoral candidate Robert Romano weighed in Wednesday on the multiday event.

Romano's take on the festival mirrors that of many East Vineland residents working to derail the pop and rock concert: He's not against the festival itself, but rather the location.

''Obviously, the music festival is a double-edged sword,'' Romano said.

The first Vineland Music Festival is planned for Aug. 8 to 10 on a 570-acre farm near Sherman Avenue and Hance Bridge Road. It is expected to draw 35,000 to 40,000 people over three days, many of whom will camp out, festival organizers said. Roughly 90 acts are expected to perform on four stages.

While the festival is likely to provide some economic benefit to Vineland and the surrounding area, the event won't be the financial grand slam Mayor Perry Barse has predicted, Romano argued.

Barse has said the festival will bring international name recognition to Vineland, as well as pump hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local economy.

If this year's festival is a success, Barse said, it could turn into an annual event.

The mayor is seeking a third term in the May 13 municipal election.

Romano is a Vineland police lieutenant and son of the late former Vineland Mayor Joseph E. Romano.

Romano said he has signed a petition opposing the festival, which is being circulated by the local group Neighbors Against Rock Concert Site.

The candidate said he has concerns about the timing of the festival because of the heat and the likelihood traffic will interfere with the work of farmers in the vicinity.

''I think it's going to be a nightmare for the neighborhood and it's going to be a nightmare for traffic,'' Romano said.

He said his opinions are based in part on his review of preliminary site plans submitted to the city by the promoters.

Residents' concerns are being addressed during the city's ongoing negotiations with the promoters, Barse said.

Romano said the festival should be moved to a more suitable location, but he could not provide a specific site.

If he's elected mayor in May, Romano said he would not interfere with the festival, but a return date the following year would not be a given.

''If everything went good and traffic is not as bad as I think it's going to be, I would re-evaluate,'' he said.

Former city school board member Nick Girone also is running for mayor.

Girone said if he's elected, he would set up a task force made up of citizens and elected officials ''to evaluate the event from every angle'' to determine if it will be an ongoing event.

We could have another Field Day Fest scenario here.
