dc residents: what water do you drink?

Anyone actually drink tap water in DC?  I drank from the tap when I lived in other places, but in DC I've always been scared off by the reports of high chloroform or whatever it's called.  So I buy gallon jugs of spring water. But now I'm learning about how bad buying bottled water is for the environment and having second thoughts.  What's the alternative?  Brita says their filters don't do anything for chlorine compounds, other than remove the odor

I spent the majority of my life in a swimming pool so if chlorine compounds affect people than I'm already screwed.  I use a Brita jug.

I drink alkaline water that's coming out of a water ionizer. It's directly connected to tap water. No need to buy bottled water as it can get expensive over time.

 I was in a bar recently and ordered a mixed drink... as I was about to take a sip I got a whiff, and it reeked! Turns out it was the ice.  The barkeep took a whiff and then poured it out and sold me a beer instead.

Americans are big fucking babies when it comes to water. Our water is fine compared to most of the world. It's cleaned and filtered and you can easily filter it further at home. But we've been taught by our crap media system to distrust it and instead pay billions of dollars a year for bottled water, much of which is tap water anyway. Corporate media breeds distrust of government-run services and utilities and persuades the public to put its trust in private enterprise, businesses that always put profit first and everything else after that, including public health. So we suck from the dihydrogen oxide teat of Corporate America instead of pressuring our elected representatives to improve water quality and we wonder why the rest of the world hates us.

Brita website. Can't link because all the content is wrapped up in some Shockwave player or whatever. But if you select a pitcher product then click on 'impurities reduction' it says "Reduces: Chlorine(taste and odor)", in other words the carbon filter reduces the taste and odor, not the chlorine itself

I had a similar experience recently.  I was wondering why all of the drinks tasted so bad.

I read that differently.  I think their point is that chlorine is not an "impurity" like lead, but that it is an additive that effects the taste and odor and that the filter removes it.
 
 If you look at other parts of their site, it says that the filter removes 99% of chlorine.  Here are some links to the UK and Australian sites that say the same.

Why is it when I housesit at my parents in Montgomery County, I feel like I'm going swimming in a pool? The levels of Chlorine are incredibly noticeable compared to anywhere else around the area, including the city itself!
