I think I need to get used to it...there are some wonderful songs and moments, but as a whole I'm missing it.  But it's so well received that I think my second or third listen with be the, "oh, I get it" moment.

you forgot it people was one of the most frustrating purchases of my music nerd career, rivaled only by henry's dress "bust em green". but yeah, some of the songs have a bunch of audio farts, but half the songs are total homeruns. pretty excited for this show, actually

 And does anyone agree that this isn't what you'd describe as a "pure pop" album (but so many reviews do....I must be missing something).

i had heard great things. not only great things, but some comparisons to dinosaur jr, one of my favs. at the time, said cd was not available in the states. i talked an ebuddy into buying a copy at a bss show in victoria, bc. he sent it to me, i got the little card, wrote "leave at door" on it and the hicks at the manassas post office...sent it back to bc. so in the two goddamn months it took to get back there, it became available in the states, but i already had a copy. so no, neither it was the purchasing, not the product that was the problem, love the disc, going to the show, i hope. was on my best of 03 list. and i love bust em green too.

you are definitely missing something, generally speaking, but I do agree with you that this is not--at all--a "pure pop" album
 
 I found it to be electronic and ambient, almost, rather than pop

Hopefully that show will be a co-headlining deal with Stars, as it was when they toured in 2003. Not sure why BSS gets more attention than Stars...Stars seems much more commercially viable. and just plain better in my opinion.

Stars and BSS have a shared member Evan Cranley.BSS has a bigger collective taking members from:Metric,Dont Make Say Think,as well as Stars which may garner them more attention.

I wouldn't call it "pure pop" by any means. It's like a mix of Dinosaur, Jr. and (older) New Order, with a little Pink Floyd thrown in.  I like it quite a bit though.

The co-headlining deal was sweet out here in SF.  They just rotated the bands playing order.  It's a must see if they do the same deal out East as they did on the west.  Both were excellent.

Count me as another that is "missing it".  I've had this album for a few months now and I can't really describe how far from "masterpiece" this is.  I believe the hype is due to the fact that this band (based on my understanding) came out of thin air.  With those expectations, I suppose it is exceptional.  Most of us however got this album based on some referral that has expectations attached.  With that in mind, I believe it is quite weak.  Some listener friendly songs, but aside from those, the rest is just arty, psuedo trendy, "hip" bologna.  But I'll most assuredly be at the BC in March and maybe see them again at Coachella.  I am willing to give them more time, probably because of the hype... but my patience is wearing thin.

Well,they've been a band for 5 years,forming in 99 and released their debut in 2001.Not necessarily what I'd consider coming out of thin air,they've been around awhile.Then again,Toronto may have thin air, I've never been there.

I guess I fall into the dont get it category...by all means, it isnt a bad record, just so far off what some of the hype I've heard....
 
 still think Im going to blow some money on the valley of the giants cd, which is some of bss, a member or two of godspeed and a couple other bands...probably going to regret it lol, but oh well
