Boy George sidesteps jail sentence The 80's popstar agrees to drug rehab.
Boy George has pleaded guilty in front of a New York Judge and entered a plea bargain with the prosecution - a move that looks to have spared him jail time.
The musician and DJ, real name George O'Dowd, was in court yesterday (March 9) to face charges relating to third degree false reporting and possession of class-A drugs after city police found a reported quantity of cocaine in his apartment.
In line with the plea agreement O'Dowd's lawyer struck with the Manhattan District Attorney, the more serious drug possession charges were dropped - charges which carried a maximum 15 years jail time. Instead, the 44-year-old dance DJ will undergo rehabilitation at a clinic in the UK and undertake five days of community service in Manhattan, along with paying a $1,000 fine.
"I am relieved and happy that this case has been disposed of, and would like to thank the judge, the district attorney and my attorney, Lou Freeman, for the fair and speedy way it was dealt with," O'Dowd, 44, said in a written statement.
"I love New York, and am looking forward to coming back and working in the states later this year."
