It's not the venue, it's the people.
I have a coworker who used to volunteer at Wolftrap (he's probably about 50, and hardly a "ranger rick punk kid"), and he told tales of attendees similar to those you describe. One time they booted a woman who was throwing shit at people's heads, who claimed that it was her right to do so because, "I'm a lawyer, I work hard all week, and I should be allowed to come and let off some steam."
That being said, I've always found the audiences to be completely agreeable.

I totally DESPISE wolftrap. God damn asshole yuppie crowd there every show. A large majority of the people attending any given show are the rudest, most arrogant, bullshit 'the world revolves around me' type I have ever seen, not to mention the wanna be ranger rick punk kids they have out there acting as if they knew a damn thing about anything. It wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit if the place burnt to the ground one more time and they never rebuilt it.
