Does anybody here know much about the British band recently signed to Matador, Seachange?  Thanks in advance.

I've heard them on KEXP, think I liked them but not quite sure i remember.

Here's what Don Yates, who dj's my favorite kexp show, swinging doors, said about their ep:

A fabulous import EP of intense, hypnotic indie-rock from this British band, who add violin to the standard guitar-bass-drums rock line-up for a distinctive twist. All four songs are outstanding, and have me eagerly awaiting their upcoming debut album (due out on Matador this Spring). - Don Yates

mmmmm, I like it.  Got that kind of generic, kind of low fi indie sound ("Glitterball," the older song) -- going along with a simple beat, then gets noisier -- oop, now it's quieter again.

I like the newer song more...still has that indie guitar/drum thing going -- not super produced, kind of Sebadoh-ish, but melodic underneath the lack of polish.  Violin -- good.

That's a fiddle, not a violin.

I see Mankie preferring Ricky Skaggs to the Dixie Chicks anyway.

An ex was a fan of Ricky Scaggs...not my kind of music but the man can play, I'll give him that.

Some fiddlers/violinists choose to surround themselves with crap music for some reason...but even with the Chicks with Dicks band, the fiddle is the best part of them....

Allegedly, the lead singer of Seachange is reminiscent of Mark E. Smith.  I'm not sure whether that's good or bad.

Soundchecking delays mean that Seachange don??t appear until just after midnight, but boy was it worth the wait.

From the opening bars of ??AvsCo10?? to the pulsating ??House Of Leaves??, Seachange prove to be an invigorating force, all six members of the band seemingly lost in their own world, following different paths before arriving back at base every now and then. It becomes nigh on impossible to take one??s eyes off the stage for a second, as guitars are wrestled to the ground, monitors are passed along the front row, and the singer bloke known as Dan, a curious amalgam of Emo Phillips' facial expressions and "anyone for a game of Twister ?" style body contortions, spits out lyrics in a way Mark E Smith would still be doing if he hadn??t disappeared up his own arse years ago.

The loose-limbed ??Seven Miles From Intrex?? officially ends the set, but it??s only a matter of time before Dan and co. are dragged back on to race through their signature tune ??Superfuck??, as feedback squalls from both guitars and violin, symbols crash and a vitriolic rant subsides declaring ??I??ve got a bomb strapped to my heart, gonna blow myself right outta here? emphatically brings the curtain down.

This may be the last time Seachange grace a venue of this size in their native city for some time, but this was Saturday night entertainment at it's best and I went home with a contented smile on my face.

That live show review is *not* grabbing me.

"all six members of the band seemingly lost in their own world, following different paths before arriving back at base every now and then"

 yuck

" feedback squalls from both guitars and violin, symbols crash and a vitriolic rant subsides"

 not for me....

But, I liked the MP3s enough to check 'em out if they came through town.

Ew Mank, good one!  (Redsock, not a comment on exit clov, just appreciation for your ongoing wrangling with the mankster)
