Never been. Will be there next Sun-Tues for a conference. Anything worth doing/seeing/eating??

Ah, my favorite West Coast city. I'll be at a conference there in August.

I think Seattle is better for coffee than food. Go to the Crocodile Cafe for brunch and the rock and roll atmosphere. http://www.thecrocodile.com/
Their website claims that they don't tolerate bigotry, sexism, or racism in any form, yet their menus use the phrase "white trash" in them. I emailed them about this but never heard back. If you go and think to ask about it, please do so. I can't think of any specific bars the recommend, but we found one with $10 pitchers of Guinness at happy hour pretty easily (not too far from the Croc, I think)

Go to Easy Street Records near the Seattle Center for a large supply of new and used cd's. http://www.buymusichere.net/stores/easystreet/enter.html They usually have some great in-stores, but it appears none when you are there. Also, if you can make it up to Capital Hill, go to Everyday Music. http://www.everydaymusic.com/ Both of these stores have a much better selection than any used cd stores in the DC area. Sonic Boom, with several locations, is good for mostly new indie stuff. www.sonicboomrecords.com

Damn, I just checked out the schedule for a few very good bands in the area to see if they have any shows coming up. They all do but they are all just after you leave except for The Upsidedown who will be in Portland and then Seattle later on in the summer.

 Trespassers William
 Hypatia Lake
 The High Violets
 Joy Wants Eternity
 The Upsidedown

that's a funny statement- i'm the complete opposite.  course, i hate coffee, and you're a vegetarian.

seattle has some fantastic restaurants though-  ella's and palace kitchen (both are tom douglas restaurants- he beat morimoto in iron chef america this season).  won't find better seafood anywhere else.  if you can find it, salumi is mario batali's father's deli. if you are downtown, union is really good too.

course, walk around pike place market (it's cherry season!), plus you can get some pretty good breakfast at market grill (i think that's the name).  if the mariners are in town, safeco is a pretty stadium (not the best new stadium, but pretty).  there are a handful of wineries just east of town.  i'm sure rhett (or maybe pollard) can give you a better feel for the neighborhoods than i, though.

I've just read (and heard from my brother, who has lived there for a number of years now) that Seattle is not exactly a world class restaurant town, and though I've done some good eating there, have never found that statement to be untrue. But I guess it's all relative. Many think DC has great restaurants, I don't.

thanks bede - I was definitely planning on trying salumi and I was also thinking of trying Dahlia Lounge, another Douglas restaurant

yeah, i mean. . seattle is no san francisco, new york, chicago or d.c. . .but, it does a handful of things really well- namely, seafood, and it's a devout adherent to using only local products, which may also account for it not being a "great" restaurant town.

If you're renting a car, and was a Twin Peaks fan, many of the sights are only an hour away from the city.

If you like architecture, I wouldn't miss the library.  It was designed by Rem Koolhaus and it's awesome.

I'll be there the week of November 5th, with a car. Concert listings look weak...any restaurant / bar recommends?

I'm going to give GGW's recommendation....Have a heart in belltown

Local 360 is fantastic, but don't be surprised if you see them pulling weeds in the alley and putting them on your plate
then you are by cloudburst and the fun dive bars like Shorties and Lava lounge

take your car on a ferry!

Hope you did your absentee ballot
edit...nevermind MD has early voting...I'm a little annoyed we don't have early voting in VA

Cloudburst brewery (check their hours first)
Fremont Brewing Company
Holy Mountain Brewing Company
No Anchor (get the radishes)
General Porpoise donuts
Stateside (so good)
If you want to spend some dollars, see if you can get a seat at the sushi bar at Wataru. Really special experience!
RockCreek Seafood and Spirits
Piroshky Piroshky
Anchorhead coffee (they also have this waffled croissant that is amaze)
