DVD Question
« on: February 13, 2004, 03:10:00 pm »
So, my girlfriend is just dying to watch a DVD that she bought in England while on Christmas holiday.  However, it's PAL formatted.  It works with a few glitches on her laptop but, obviously, won't play at all on my DVD player.

Anyone know a way around this?

There are 2 issues.....

 Pal vs secam.....

 Regional encoding.....

The regional encoding is probably why it wont play in your DVD player. If Vansmack were here...He has an all regions DVD player. Check the box for regional encoding.....

If its all regions you can come and watch it on my giant laptop. You could probably do that anyway.... But I can only switch regional encoding 5 times before the firmware on my computer gets upset. I am sure your G/f's computer has similar systems.....

The DVD plays, how you say... jerky.  It skips frames, etc.  Thanks for the info on the actual player itself though.

You do realize that you're offering to watch every single episode of The Goodies that was ever recorded?

No its not every episode .... Its just some highlites..... Its 2 discs, right? So it is region 2. It should work fine on a laptop that can play DVDs normally, but watch out for the firmware.....

As I say apple only lets you switch regions 5 times, after that you are buggered. I am sure all US sold laptops have similar protection. So if you come and watch it you will be taking up two of my region changes, so you would have to watch it all.

Yeh, just two discs.  Some pretty funny stuff actually.

If you watched on a laptop, did you have it on a solid surface? My old one played DVDs really jumpy if I had it on my knee, if I put it on the table it played adequately.

The newer faster drives in laptops are much more forgiving.

I have not seen the goodies since I was 13. I though it was funny, back then. But I had a lot of strange ideas at that age.

Actually, it wasn't on a solid surface.  That's a good suggestion.

The Kitten Kong episode is pretty amusing.

Ecky thump....now there's a classic!

I wonder if I would also find it funny now, I laughed at it years ago, but I used to laugh at Monty Python but that humour didn't age well with me either.

She's mentioned Ecky Thump.  For a while I didn't know what the hell she was talking about until she explained it to me.  I'll have to check it out.

And Mankie, I'm with you.  I really don't care for Monty Python at all.
