« on: June 11, 2008, 05:12:00 pm »
i've gotten in a rut with my indie pop / power pop stuff, anyone have any good recommendations for new bands/albums?

Check out The Lodger, new band on Slumberland with elements of Housemartins, Orange Juice, Field Mice...

Julie Ocean is a must listen - local band and on emusic

My Brother Woody is another recent discovery - also very good - more indie than power pop - think Beulah

There's a new Dr. Dog album on the way. i'm not necessarily endorsing the band or the new album, but I remember you being a fan...

I assume you've heard Robbers On High Street? I'm positive anyone who likes Dog Problems would also like that one

A couple other great power-pop hook-sters I got into recently, although I guess they aren't so new: Jim Boggia, Mark Bacino

I like this quite a bit. It's not a breakthrough by any means, and the production is real real raw, but it's a fun rocking album.

have been listening to a lot more from the electronic music subgenres at the moment so will have to stick with my usually picks for the most part

 but am also diggin'

 bellman barker local band

 p. hux  http://www.parthenonhuxley.com/  his most recent album "kiss the monster" is one of the few power pop albums that i've heard that could get a parental warning sticker. check out the track "my friend hates me"

 from emusic

Hooverphonic - "The President Of The LSD Golf Club" not sure how "indie" this one is, but they like Lucky Soul take musical inspiration from the 60s and nicely updates it.   in this case it's psychedelic pop

the autumns "fake noise from a box of toys" - more shoegazer than pop, but am really liking this record

the lodger is a great suggestion. their debut was my favorite indie-pop record of the past year.

i'm booking this new band called gospel gossip from minnesota that are pretty damn good.

 also, check out human television.

julie ocean is classic indie-pop, too.

cause co-motion is pretty good, definitely on the shambolic side of indie pop. they are on what's your rupture?, a label out of NYC that is pretty reliable, if not too prolific, when it comes to indie pop stuff.

Mine as well.  I'm not quite as enthralled with the new one.  It's still really good, though.  They put on a hell of a show at the Velvet Lounge, too.  It's a shame more people weren't there to see it.

And if you don't have it already, you should pick up the Flying Nun box set -- four discs of relatively obscure and frequently amazing New Zealand indie pop, punk, new wave* and noise compiled in a beautiful package.  I can't recommend it highly enough.

 * I realize that new wave never really existed and was the polite thing to say when you were trying to explain you were not into the boring old rock & roll, but you didn't dare to say punk, because you were afraid to get kicked out of the party and they wouldn't give you coke anymore.

Ditto Edbert's recommendation of Jim Boggia and add to that Mike Viola.
