St. Louis ranked most dangerous city
 Updated 10/30/2006 12:17 PM ET

 By Christopher Leonard, Associated Press
ST. LOUIS â?? Just days after the St. Louis Cardinals won the top honor in Major League Baseball, their hometown jumped to first place on a list no one wants to lead: the most dangerous cities in the United States.
This Midwestern city has long been in the upper tiers of the annual ranking of the nation's safest and most dangerous cities, compiled by Morgan Quitno Press. Violent crime surged nearly 20% there from 2004 to last year, when the rate of such crimes rose much faster in the Midwest than in the rest of nation, according to FBI figures released in June.

ON DEADLINE: City still thinking baseball; your thoughts | Rankings

"It's just sad the way this city is," resident Sam Dawson said. "On the news you hear killings, someone's been shot."

The ranking, being released Monday, came as the city was still celebrating Friday's World Series victory at the new Busch Stadium. St. Louis has been spending millions of dollars on urban renewal even as the crime rate climbs.

Mayor Francis Slay did not return calls to his office seeking comment Sunday.

Scott Morgan, president of Morgan Quitno Press, a private research and publishing company specializing in state and city reference books, said he was not surprised to see St. Louis top the list, since it has been among the 10 most dangerous cities for years.

Morgan said the study looks at crime only within St. Louis city limits, with a population of about 330,000. It doesn't take into account the suburbs in St. Louis County, which has roughly 980,000 residents.

The safest city in 2005 was Brick, N.J., population about 78,000, followed by Amherst, N.Y., and Mission Viejo, Calif. The second most dangerous city was Detroit, followed by Flint, Mich., and Compton, Calif.

Cities are ranked based on more than just their crime rate, Morgan said. Individual crimes such as rape or burglary are measured separately, compared to national averages and then compiled to give a city its ranking. Crimes are weighted based on their danger to people.

The national FBI figures released in June showed the murder rate in St. Louis jumped 16% from 2004 to 2005, compared with 4.8% nationally. The overall violent crime rate increased nearly 20%, compared with 2.5% nationally.

While crime increased in all regions last year, the 5.7% rise in the 12 Midwestern states was at least three times higher than any other region, according to the FBI.

Visiting St. Louis on Thursday, FBI director Robert Mueller said it was too early to tell why some types of crime were rising faster in the Midwest.

Mueller said the FBI is working harder to form partnerships with police departments to launch programs like St. Louis' Safe Streets task force, which focuses police efforts on problematic neighborhoods.

This year's ranking was good news for Camden, N.J., which in 2005 was named the most dangerous city for the second year in a row.

Camden Mayor Gwendolyn Faison said Sunday she was thrilled to learn that her city no longer topped the most-dangerous list.

"You made my day!" said Faison, who has served since 2000. "There's a new hope and a new spirit."

Oh, so according to this list, St. Louis isn't the most dangerous city, it's the 371st safest place to live. That's very different.

 It's all about the spin.

The NYPD may be slashing its work force, but the FBI announced that NYC is once again the safest big city, while crime is rising in other cities across the country. Some stats for 2005: Overall crime dropped 4.3%, versus a 1.1% drop across the country, and violent crime fell 1.9% in NYC, versus a 2.5% increase in the country. But officials didn't want to make any promises about "lowest murder rate ever," as the murder rate seems to be creeping up slightly (though it'll still be near historical lows).

How ironic after someone got shot at 10pm on Saturday night on U St between 13th and 14th. Some things will never change no matter how expensive of a place you buy in the area.  :)

Concerning Baltimore, what is not mentioned; and probably not known by most others outside of the area; is that Marty O'Moron has strong armed the police department into not reporting crimes. (Yes, this has been documented and no I do not have the internet link but I'm sure you can google it yourself.)

The police are quitting in droves, partly because of this and other crap. There have been tons and tons of on and off the record reports by police officers, victims and witnesses of out and out crimes being totally ignored or misrepresented all for the sake of making Marty look good in the numbers for the sake of the election. And no, I'm not an Erlich fan by any stretch of the imagination but I fear O'Moron the mobster even more.

There have been incidents where people were murdered by being stabbed in the back and they were written up as suicides and the like. All kinds of nasty goings on like this. I can't remember a lot of what I've heard and read but this is the kind of stuff that I saw going on everyday in the Baltimore Shitty School system. A pure numbers game to make things appear one way where in fact the truth was a whole different reality.

Another thing that the police department did was destroy a whole lot of documents. Yes, that is illegal but they did it anyway. Their excuse, they didn't have enough file folders!

Can't help but believe that poor St. Louis just told the truth while some of the others played the fudging numbers game.

Then there must be 2 'morons' in Baltimore Shitty. One at City Hall and another a deported Canadian. What a shame, as I had thought that you had brought some brains down with you.

It would serve you well to do some real research on the dirty and even evil things that man has been up to.

I've seen Baltimore City government from the inside for many years and I can tell you that man is a mobster, along with most of the City Council, especially the City Council President.

You really need to do some real research and not just showing up to some dumbass O'Moron fake Irish gig.

And if you think I'm saying any of this to promote Erlich, you are sadly mistaken since I think he's nothing but a shill for the Bush Administration; hence, the evil side of the NWO. In my opinion, no matter who wins next week, all of Maryland loses.

now you're calling me a moron?  i think YOU are the one whos sadly mistaken.

all i said  was that Baltimore wasnt the ONLY city to phony up crime numbers. and i implied O Malley was going to win the election.

i didnt once imply that you were voting for ehrlich OR that i liked o malley or that i didnt think he was a shifty politician.

you, my friend...or actually not my friend at all since you called me a moron for no reason, need to gain some reading comprehension skills before you start name calling.
