exploding wine bottle
« on: November 01, 2006, 05:22:00 pm »
I have to think there are some wine drinkers out there who can advise me on this. Last night I was using one of those corkscrews that has a needle on the end and you pump air into the bottle. Normally the pressure builds up inside the bottle and the cork pops out. In my case, the bottle shattered. Was this a freak occurrence or has this happened to anyone else?

Never had it explode, but I did have it shoot wine out of the bottle while the cork was somehow still in.  It came out like a high-pressured rocket, splashing people across the room.  It was the first and last time I ever used one of those.

Besides, the boxes open a hell of a lot easier.

I guess that's what you get for using one of those fancy-pants corkscrews.

never used one of those- i'd rather not force air into a bottle of wine.  i use a simple waiter's corkscrew.

Hope that it wasn't a red.

I've got one of those and have found it doesn't work all that well. Actually, I have all different kinds of corkscrews and removers which sometimes come in handy considering how tricky some of those corks can be. What really makes it even tougher is when the damned cork crumbles and you end up having to push it inside the bottle and pick out the little floaties. Real classy!

Speaking of classy cork removal, once I was at a friend's house and no matter how hard we tried to remove the cork with a couple different types, it wouldn't budge, other than in towards the bottle. Finally, to my utter suprise, this one guy got it cleanly out by gently hammering a medium sized nail into the center of the cork and pulling it out. (Which is also a pretty nifty trick to keep in mind if you find yourself without a corkscrew.)

Thanks for the tip.  I won't be buying one of those, which is too bad cause it looked pretty cool when I saw a guy do it while yodelling.  Or was he rapping?

If you see one really cheap like at the Dollar Store or something, it might be worth it for some of those pesky corks. Not so much that this one alone will do it but sometimes it helps in combination with others by helping to provide a tiny bit of a barrier when the damn thing starts sinking in towards the bottle while using another corkscrew.

I don't care what any fancy waiter says, there is no such thing as the perfect corkscrew. Yes, the more professional ones are often better but there are times when even they won't do the trick as nicely as you would hope which is why I have a whole variety of different kinds.

Corks in wine bottles? What are you people talking about? I just twist the cap to the left and it comes right off. Remember, it's left to loosen, right to tighten.
