Lollapalooza injustice
« on: July 24, 2006, 08:23:00 pm »
Just saw the schedule and these bands are playing at the same time! I feel sorry for the people who bought tickets...

 Here we go:

 1. Iron and Wine - The Secret Machines.
 2. The Raconteurs - My Morning Jacket.
 3. Sleater-Kinney - Violent Femmes.
 4. Wilco - Queens of the Stone Age
 5. Gnarls Barkley - Sonic Youth

Having been to Coachella, I learned to make choices on which band I wanted to see more.

That said, those seem like no-brainers to me.

 3. Sleater-Kinney - Violent Femmes.
 4. Wilco - Queens of the Stone Age
 5. Gnarls Barkley - Sonic Youth
1. Neither
 2. Racounteurs (because I doubt they'll be around for long)
 3. SK (one of their last shows ever)
 4. QOTSA wins on this one, but only slightly, I wasn't wowed the last time I saw them.
 5. Sonic Youth

Random Citizen nailed it, though I wouldn't mind seeing Secret Machines. Those are easy picks for me.

i am going to Lolla and while there ARE a pair or so of hard choices, nothing earth shattering and an aftershow of Blackalicious, Lyrics Born and Ohmega Watts at the House Of Blues takes 3 of my 5 conflicts out of play.

also, having tickets to the Virgin Fest makes it easy for me to choose against the Raconteurs and Gnarls Barkley.

trust me, having too many options at a show is NEVER a bad thing!

I would not have the slightest problem with any of those pairings.

 Secret Machines
 Raconteurs
 Sleater-Kinney
 QOTSA
 head home....

I'm actually really surprised that I don't have any big dilemmas for this festival. These are pretty easy for me:

 1. Secret Machines
 2. Don't really care either way, probably MMJ
 3. Sleater-Kinney
 4. Wilco
 5. Sonic Youth

The biggest conflict for me would probably be Feist vs. The Go! Team. I've seen Feist and I know all my friends are gonna wanna see her, but I've never seen The Go! Team. I'd most likely have to fly solo if I wanna see em. Are they any good live?

The Go! Team aren't entirely successful at recreating the fun and energy of their recordings live. That said, I did enjoy their performance at the Cat earlier this year - just wasn't blown away. I recall a very opinionated thread on this show...bet you could dig it up somewhere to get more insight.

Who do you think I am? ggwâ?¢?   ;)

Yeah, I think I recall hearing lukewarm reviews of their live shows. Feist, on the other hand, I like alot more live than on record...

Here's a review of Feist from Noise Pop performance in March

 (from bagelradio.com)

Lesley Feist has a beautiful voice, star-quality stage presence, plus so much humor and grace that she can turn severe technical difficulties into a performance asset. In other words, mondo charisma.

The person writing this grew up falling asleep listening to "You're So Vain" and "Caronina in My Mind" in the back of the family car many Sunday evenings during the drive home to Queens from visiting cousins in Connecticut At various points during Feist's set, I would not have been surprised to hear such Carly Simon or James Taylor songs covered.

More important disclosure: the person writing this tends to dislike music created after punk rock that in no way references punk rock.

Leslie Feist's set tonight in no way referenced punk rock. Strike one.

The reason I stayed at Bimbo's after Youth Group (who weren't as good as their record, more like a poor man's James, but even a poor man's James is quality) was not that I wanted to see Feist, nor even the excellent John Vanderslice, but because an old friend was back in town and I wanted to hang out with her.

Feist's first two songs were very strong, which let my friend off the hook for having kept me at the unnecessarily strict "stay in the designated areas and don't you dare snap a digital photo, that's not included in the $18 ticket price" Bimbo's venue instead of letting me head off into the foggy night towards other, more laid-back Noise Pop venues.

Then came the third song, "Gatekeeper," which I played on my show last June. For three weeks. Listeners who complained then: you were absolutely right and I apologize. Live, "Gatekeeper" made me think I was on the Lido Deck of The Love Boat back in the day when women apparently found Bernie "Doc" Koppel hott. The flügelhorn was the least "adult contemporary" thing about it, and you can't get much more adult contemporary than the flügelhorn. Strike two.

The fourth song had me thinking "70s corportate comb-over rock," so when later in the set the PA cut out and Feist deftly handled the nightmare technical difficulties situation, I still couldn't stand what was going on. Stee-rike three, grab some pine, boy.

What did I expect from someone whose best song is a Bee Gees cover?

Finally I gave up and my old friend and I headed for the bar room away from the concert hall. Just as we exited the concert hall Feist announced the addition of Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene to her stage troupe, but at that point even his appearance and the possibility of a post-punk influenced song could not keep me in the room.

I wouldn't have much trouble with those conflicts except for Sleater-Kinney and The Violent Femmes.  That would be a painful decision.  The Femmes are one of the best live bands I've ever seen, but I've never seen Sleater-Kinney (hopefully to be remedied on August 1st...I still need to find tickets).  And that'll be their last show ever.

 1.  Iron and Wine (easily), except that Mates of State cut into the first half.  Now there's a conflict.
 2.  My Morning Jacket (also easily)
 3.  Since I can't go anyway, I refuse to make that choice.
 4.  Queens of the Stone Age (possibly neither)
 5.  Sonic Youth (also possibly neither)

What about the terrible three-way conflict of Stars, Editors and Jeremy Enigk?

I think that's by far the worst one of the weekend.  I think I'm choosing Editors...but we'll see.

 As for the others:

 Secret Machines
 My Morning Jacket
 Sleater-Kinney or neither
 Wilco
 Gnarls Barkley

i think it depends on the heat and how far these stages really are apart.

i have heard they are quite a ways, so Friday, i am staying on one side of the venue to see

 deadboy
 midlake
 aqualung
 eels
 jeremy enigk
 ryan adams
 lady sovereign
 my morning jacket
 sleater kinney
 death cab

this takes out a whole 50% of the festival i dont have to trek to and from.

and really, the secret machines and raconteurs are the only real casualty and i have seen one 6 times and the other i will see in sept.

my advice to those who are going, look at the map while deciding which bands, as you may be walking a 1/2 mile to get from one to the other...like the walk from the Secret Machines to MMJ. esp if you plan on seeing Ryan Adams.

Well, seeing as I've seen the Secret Machines 3 times in the past year and have never seen Iron and Wine, my lineup for those 5 will be:

 Iron and Wine
My Morning Jacket (REALLY don't like Raconteurs)
Sleater-Kinney (I'll never get the chance again)
 Wilco hands down
Gnarles Barkley (At least I'll get to hear a Femmes cover)

I just got my tickets in the mail today, so I'm getting pumped.  3 days of jam-packed music goodness (which somehow Coheed squeezed itself into...that's not out of place at all?).

And does anyone know of a hotel in the area that might have a vacancy?  I'm coming up short, and starting to worry.
