The Gutter Twins
« on: February 17, 2008, 06:04:00 am »
I was in NYC for the Valentine's Day Gutter Twins (Greg Dulli & Mark Lanegan) show. It was awesome. Wait, awesome doesn't even describe what it was. It was one of those shows where you left with a big grin on your face.

They did two sets, one with songs from Saturnalia and the second included songs by the Twilight Singers, Screaming Trees, and from Mark Lanegan's solo work. The backing band is the Twilight Singers save for a new drummer.

Definitely recommend checking them out when they play at the 9:30.

Just got the new album off a streaming site. It's stellar, no surprise there. I'll be seeing them in Amsterdam this week, and I expect no less than a life-changing experience. If I get to toke one up with 'em, even better.  ;)  From what I remember (alcohol tinged memories), the band and Mr. Dulli are just real nice guys.

This thread isn't about Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears. Does not deliver.

Promo for the album came in. Sounds pretty good.

Dulli will never top Black Love though.

That is indeed a damn fine album. It's my favorite Whigs album and I still play it often. But I'm enjoying the ride Dulli's taking us on through his work with the Lo-Fi Allstars, Lanegan, Uptown Lights, Twilight Singers, etc.

I'm excited that Saturnalia is finally coming out. And even more excited that they're touring for it. Two weeks 'til the PDX show!  :D

I prefer Gentlemen, though Black Love is great too.

A girl once gave me a breakup tape that had about half of Genlemen on it.

A breakup tape?? Never heard of such a thing. Seems like such a waste of time. But then, have you ever been in any failed relationship that didn't fit the words to "Gentlemen?" The ones you remember, at least.

Yeah this is pretty much the one and only breakup tape i've ever gotten or heard of...all I remember is the Whigs stuff (my curse and fountain and fairfax) Fly Over by Jawbox and that's about it.

It was a hoot while it lasted though...well at least the first year or so...

I know I will get crucified for this but Powder Burns is one of my favorite albums of Dulli's now, every time I go back and listen to it I realize again how good it is. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Congregation, though. It was one of the first "deeper" Whigs albums I listened to, and I still do. I find myself searching deeper into his collection as time goes by, especially the live performances. There is alot to keep one occupied. ;o)

Burning, why would you get "crucified" because you like a Twilight Singers album? Powder Burns was indeed a great album as is Blackberry Belle. I prefer the non-Fila Brazilia version of the debut album from them, though.

Comparing the Whigs to Twilight Singers to Gutter Twins isn't really an option, personally. They're all separate entities who just happen to have some similarities.

aaah, a seperate thread for all the board Dulli- worshippers!

I did once make a breakup tape for a friend who had just gone through a bad one....man there was some depressing but hopefully cathartic stuff on there

I think I have to go with Gentlemen as my favorite album although Black Love has my favorite song, Blame etc (and my second favorite Going to Town)

I agree that the different phases of his career aren't comparable - I like the Twilight Singers but have found their work a little inconsistent and actually Powder Burns may be my least favorite Dulli product

But really looking forward to Saturnalia - thanks for the link.
