About that Guns and Roses show
« on: November 10, 2006, 09:11:00 pm »
When will they ever learn...

GN'R: No drinking on stage? No show!

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) -- Guns N' Roses canceled a performance in Portland, Maine, this week after being told by state officials that the band could not drink on stage.

Inspectors from the state fire marshal's office gave the band the no-drinking order when they came to look over the pyrotechnics planned for Monday's scheduled concert at the Cumberland County Civic Center, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Public Safety Department.

McCausland said the band had wanted to drink beer, wine and Jagermeister while performing. A couple of hours after being told that would violate state law, Guns N' Roses canceled its concert, he said.

After the cancellation, a band spokesperson blamed fire marshals for "making it impossible for the band to perform their show to the usual high standards that their fans deserve." The press release, however, did not give a specific reason for the pullout.

Band leader Axl Rose issued a statement through the Guns N' Roses Web site apologizing to fans in Maine.

"It was important for us to play there and it is a shame that what should have been a great night for all of us was not possible due to the actions of two people," said Rose, referring to the fire marshals.

"I agree with, and ultimately take responsibility for, the end decision not to jeopardize the safety of the fans, the crews, the bands and myself as a result of the methods of these particularly draconian authorities," Rose's statement said. "We hope to find another way to play for you in the future."

Jeff Austin, supervisor of liquor licensing and inspection for the state Department of Public Safety, said state law prohibits performers from drinking while on stage, and prohibits employees at establishments with liquor licenses from drinking on the job.

"It's been on the books for years," said Austin, adding that he talked to state inspectors Monday afternoon while they were at the civic center to read them the law.

Austin said he's issued citations for three or four administrative violations of the no-drinking law this year.

The Cumberland County Civic Center Web site said refunds for the Guns N' Roses concert would be issued at the point of purchase.

Technically, alcohol is also illegal on stage in Virginia too.  Though I've only really seen it enforced when bands do something really stupid like try to hand out shots to underage audience members or in the case of the Bloodhound Gang one time, try to bong a whole bottle of Jager.

Yeah.  I was there.  It was some ol' last minute decision type shit.  Like, fuck it let's go type deal.  Here's a rundown:

*Suicide Girls were the openers.  I'm sure some of you know who they are.  They had pasties over their nipples.  (BLOWER!)  There was one hot ass chick doing a strip routine with a hula hoop.  Me personally, I'm not so into dead chicks, so the rest of 'em ain't really turn me on too tough.

*Sebastian Bach was next.  I put up with it for about 15-20 minutes, but all he does is fuckin' scream for his whole set.  That shit was mad annoying, and I vamped to get more beer.  His act was jive like, "Look at ME!  I'm a grown ass man on Ritalin!!!!"  I wasn't really feelin' it, but the heavy (60%) trailer park crowd (I'd say 25% were Spanish, other 15% like me miscellaneous) seemed into it, plus half the crowd appeared to be yay-ed or Oxycontin-ed the fuck up.  I don't judge, so do you.  Made for a hell of a laugh though.

*Axl & 'em hit the stage at 11:00.  Yes.  11:00 p.m.  Opening licks from "Welcome To The Jungle."  All was forgiven.  He sounded good.  Real good.  Sustained his yells, hit his lil' sway dance.  It was all good.  UNTIL . . . I was forced to sit through 4 gratuitous guitar solos throughout the night (Axl must be outta shape), in addition to a separate piano solo plus another drum solo.  If it wasn't for all that extra shit, I may have forgotten that Slash wasn't there.  But if if was a spliff, we'd all be fucked up.

All in all, Axl gave a 2.5 hour show.  (Over @ 1:25 a.m. or so - of course, they ended with "Paradise City".  Like you ain't know.)  He put forth a solid show, his band sounded aight.  Can't complain.  Plus the new songs were a lot better than you would expect.  Far from the greatest show I've ever seen, but it wasn't wack.  Anyone wants picures, I took a shitload - I'll be happy to share.  Peace . . . .

LOL . . . . Layman's terms   :D  - Sebastian Bach's overgrown Ritalin boy act was wearing thin.  So I departed the performance to purchase & imbibe another cold, frothy Miller Life.

Today's Sesame Street slanguage lesson of the day:

Vamp = Leave (i.e. to depart; e.g. "Amber & Heather's latte party was weak, so we vamped.)

did axl disappear off of stage multiple times during the show, perhaps when the solos were in process?  there is an ongoing rumour that he has an oxygen tank (michael jackson style) that he keeps stage left.

Yeah he did.  I kinda figured that last night minus the oxygen tanks.  And if I remember correctly it was definitely stage left.  Those solos were fairly fuckin' boring.  I woulda rather been forced to Celene Dion's catalog.  Well .... maybe not that bad.  But you get my drift.  Axl did sound good in all fairness.  But those wack ass solos (all 5 of 'em) just magnified Slash's absence more IMO. Four guitarists, two keys men, & a drummer - it was a little extra.  Whatever . . . . I got the tix for half of face value, so it was cool.  It had some nostalgic value and what not . . .

It was at about 60% or so capacity.  Lower bowl was pretty much filled (100s & 200s), Floor was mostly full (that's where I was), & a handful of scattered souls in the uppers.  I think Axl knows cats are weary of his 15-year string of antics, which is why I think he wanted to put on a good show.  It is what it is . . . .

After one night, The Eagles of Death Metal are tossed from the G 'n' R tour.

 So Much For That Gig

Who'd have thought it would be so easy to get on Axl Rose's bad side? Following its set on the first night of a three week gig opening for Guns N' Roses, Eagles of Death Metal found themselves out in the cold.

The November 24 show in Cleveland got off to a rousing start with opener Sebastian Bach, who relived some of his '80s hits and played some new material to the general approval of the crowd.

Things quickly went south however, almost the moment the EODM hit the stage. According to John Soeder, pop critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the audience wasn't quite sure what to make of the band.

Soeder told MTV News, "My impression was, and I don't want to belittle the GN'R fans, but they didn't really get the inside-joke quality of the EODM -or the facial hair," a reference to the thick, Village People-style handlebar mustache worn by Eagles frontman Jesse "The Devil" Hughes. Soeder went on to say that the band left the stage to "a few boos, some spare applause, but definitely no cheering."

After a two-hour wait for GNR to appear, Rose hit the stage swinging. He reportedly asked the audience, "So how'd you like the Pigeons of Shit Metal? Don't worry, that's the last show they're playing with us."

And that was that. End of the line for Eagles of Death Metal.

Apparently unfazed by the incident, EODM released a cheeky statement on November 27 that played on the names of several GN'R hits.

Besides, with a full slate of European and U.K. tour dates on their plate beginning in January and running through March, it's a safe bet the band ain't crying in the cold November rain.

WOW...I'm sort of shocked that they were even picked to open up for them. That being said, I'm not surprised that they were tossed off. In a parallel universe they'd be a pretty decent pairing, but in this one I can't imagine G'n'R fans would understand that sense of humor.
