My version of Murphy's Law....
« on: March 08, 2004, 04:51:00 pm »
...is buying CDs that I end up really digging *after* the band has passed through D.C.  I miss them, often, by a matter of weeks.

 Most recent example, Wheat.  Duh....

And I'm sure there will be more from recent CD purchases.

I know, but I don't want to pay $25 for a Liz Phair show -- I was very disappointed with her show last fall.  And how long will they play....they were just here at the Cat, playing their own show.  My bad; I'm a loser.  I should pay more attention to Kurosawa.

Isn't Wheat kind of in the same boat with Toad the Wet Sprocket?

Well, you're lucky. I usually discover a band and then they break-up, or die. Concrete Blonde, Elliott Smith, Rival Schools... Yeah C.Blonde got back together, but 8 years too late.

earlier stuff was closer to shoegazing type bands, the new stuff is very poppy, I don't remember Toad well enough to say if it is similar, I loved the first track off the new album when I first heard it, but it wore thin quickly, enough so that I skipped the show

Guess you need to start relying more on pitchdork and less on mtv.

Which leaves you as indiscriminate as Pollard!

Below's my list, but I'll bet of the CDs I got in Cali, there will be 3 - 4 of bands that have already been through town in 2004.  And of course, you're not sharing your new faves with me anymore....

The list (I may get to about 1/4 or 1/3 of the shows on the list, but it's good to have 'em in my calendar).  I'm definitely going to the shows with asterisks:

Get Up Kids, Recher Theater (Sun, Mar 14)

 Mekons, Iota (Mar 14)

 * British Sea Power, BC (Mon., Mar 15) $12

Great Big Sea, the Push Stars, 9:30 Club (Wed., Mar 17) $20

Mic Harrison (of Superdrag), Velvet, 3/20)

 * The Decemberists, Clearlake, BC (Tues., Mar 23) $10

The Alarm, Hard Rock Cafe (Tues, Mar 23)

The Fever, The Roger Sisters, BC Backstage (Wed., Mar 24)

 * Broken Social Scene, Stars, BC (Thur., Mar 25)
 $13/$15d.o.s.

Bettie Serveert, Iota 3:00 pm show (Sun, 3/28)

Oranges Band, John Vanderslice, Will Johnson, Ottobar (Sat., Mar 27)

Sleepy Jackson, Earlimart, BC Sun., Mar 28)

Panthers, TV on the Radio, BC Backstage (Mon., Mar 29) $8

Stellastarr*, The Killers, BC (Mon., Mar 29) $10

 Delgados, BC (Tues, Mar 30)

John Prine, Warner Theatre (Thur., Apr 1)

 * Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Kweller, 9:30 Club (Apr 3)

Liz Phair, 9:30 Club (Sun., Apr 4) $25

if tickets don't sell out by next week, there's a good chance that i'll be at that show as well.

Very fun!  We have 16 folks going.  Holy cow.

I'm assuming y'all have your own GBV posses, but if not, you're welcome to come drink with us before and at the show!
