how much leeway does a band have with set times?
« on: April 09, 2009, 09:49:37 pm »
to anyone who has experience booking bands and/or running a club (hey seth)...

how much leeway does a band have with set times?  does the contract with the band state how long they have to play for?  the max they can play for?  if they start 20 minutes late, can they end 20 minutes later? (if it's their fault, vs. not their fault)  if the crowd is going nuts and clamoring for more, how long can they stay on stage?  other than their own desire and/ability to play more, why might a band decide to call it quits - to not piss off their road crew?  to not piss off the promoter/venue operator?

the above is asked assuming that the band has the luxury of playing more.  at the explosions in the sky early show at the 930 two years back, the crowd was hootin' and hollerin' for more - the band informed the crowd that there was no time for an encore b/c of the impending late show.  in that case, they obviously had a hard stop.  but what if the band doesn't?

thanks.

It is typically stated in the contract that "Artist" will perform 45-60 mins (or whatever length) and it might even say they are doing one or two encores so the sound and stage crew don't jump the gun to start taking things off the stage.

Provided there are no laws saying live music has to be over by a certain time (ie. midnight) then a band could play for as long as there is a crowd and people are still drinking.

A band might call it quits and not keep playing if they've got a long travel to the next gig and need to make bus/road call by a certain time to make sure they're at the next location. Tour bus drivers are only allowed to drive 10 hours and then they've got to rest and not in the bus either. So the bus would need to be at the venue so gear could be loaded out since the bus isn't going to be moved once the driver has been taken to the hotel to sleep all day.

The flexibility with if they go on late can they play later all depends on again if live music has to be over by a certain time by law, not by "this is what time we stop having bands play because of the metro"

forget that there was a late show, Explosions in the Sky never play encores...

at the explosions in the sky early show at the 930 two years back, the crowd was hootin' and hollerin' for more - the band informed the crowd that there was no time for an encore b/c of the impending late show.
