Death From Above 1979
« on: January 06, 2005, 10:37:00 am »
I apologize in advance if this topic was started previously....

But has anyone checked out Death From Above's "You're a Woman, I'm a Machine"? It was released back in Oct/Nov and it fucking kicks serious ass. I'm not much of a fan of garage rock (OK, OK...whatever the hell THAT means) but these guys seem to have a better songwriting sense than other bands of that ilk. These guys are just bass and drums - a little bit metal, a little bit pop....distortion laden and angrier sounding than Scott Lucas at his best. Maybe this is what Foo Fighters would sound like if they were stripped down and updated their sound.

Anyhow - the reason I bring it up is that they're touring but the closest they'll come to DC is a show on 1/28 in Philly. Looks like it's time for a roadtrip!

And...I would be remiss if I neglected to mention...they're my homies from Toronto.  :)

I think they played Velvet Lounge not too long ago.

I saw em last year in London (ONT) with Billy Talent.  they put on a great live show, albeit loud as all get out.

you know those guys canuck?  they are quite a rowdy looking pair.

Holy crap - you're right!! I'm a few months behind the times. They were there in Sept of last year.

haha - no, I don't KNOW the guys. Just that they're from my (adopted) hometown of Toronto. But they will be worth the drive up to Philly. It's been awhile since someone made my ears bleed like that.

lol. thats hilarious

that show was on in the US??????

Wake up in the morning, feeling shy and lonely,
gee, I gotta go to this school.
 I don't think I can make it, don't think I can take,
I wonder what I'm gonna do.
But when I look around and see,
that someone is smiling right at me,
wait, someone talkin' to me, hey, I gotta new friend.
Everybody can succeed, all you gotta do is believe,
let's be honest with yourself, forget your fears and doubts,
come on give us a try at Degrassi Junior High.

Saskatoon is the birthplace (born in the same hospital as Gordie Howe - how's that for street cred?). Ottawa is where I was tortured as a teen. Toronto is what I call home. Used to live in North York right next to the high school where the boys in Rush went!

Degrassi...I was always hot for Caitlin. We have to admit to a guilty pleasure for Degrassi: The Next Generation (we even Tivo it). She's not so hot anymore. And I'm not allowed to think of the students in that way anymore  ;)

Caitlin was quite the cutie... living in that suburb of Windsor called Detroit I had a bit of crush on her as well via the CBC. I was going to say that I wasn't watching the "The Next Gen" because the couple of episodes I saw the message was being applied with a sledgehammer.  But that may change now that I findout that all grown-up Caitlin is on.  :p   She was also in "Jersey Girl" which makes sense seeing as Kevin Smith is a huge Degrassi fan.

My parents have CBC radio on almost all day long, so when I was back home for the holidays I got loads of thier programming.  Not sure which show it was but, the comment about Wendy Mesley in a thong put a smile on my face.

The show was the Vinyl Cafe and Stuart McLean is the host-very cute show.  Had no idea there were so many Cdns out there-nice to see we are taking over.  How are Death from above 1979  live, I like their new album, kinda almost grown up indie.  But is it worth the road trip
