So, let's get on with it. Sitting tight? This is called Google Liquid Galaxy. Its designer, software engineer Jason Holt, demonstrated it yesterday at the TED 2010 (Technology, Entertainment and Design) conference going on this week in California.

The contraption is composed of eight LCD panels set up to make a wraparound chamber in which a person stands and manipulates his or her perspective on the world (à la Google Earth and Street View) with a simple controller. For those of you who have never used these miraculous Google innovations, they allow you to see more or less everything in the world from any vantage, from a high-up satellite perspective to an intricate street-level view.

Liquid Galaxy, like Google Earth, allows you to soar effortlessly from place to place all over the world, zooming in and out at will and even diving down underwater to inspect the sea floor. You honestly feel like you're flying around the planet like Superman, or at least it looks like you do. What I wouldn't give to try that little LCD chamber out myself. Take a look!"
