apparently the guitarist and drummer from TOOL were really feeling them and Dimmu Borgir who I think nded up openning on Euro leg of their tour, so they asked them to ride.

I've never been to JAxxxxxxx in springfeidl but judging from their ads they have a lot of fine deathmetal shows as well as some good southern hard rock. My dj partner just saw Artimus Pyledriver and they rocked her world significantly

Sushi-

Be careful here. These are all great current metal recommendations, but I'm not sure we are even talking about the same thing.

There's little resemblance between even Judas Priest & a band like Mastodon.

Metal is a very broad genre. Just because you like Iron Maiden/Rush/Black Sabbath doesn't necessarily mean that you will like many of these new darker/heavier metal bands.

 Just a thought...

Yup, thanks for that warning...tried my hardest to get thru a Lamb of God cd - and my best friend is a big Slipknot fan...with all due respect to their fans, I think it's an acquired taste.  I figure this particular iPod won't be plugged into my ears.

Well, Mastodon sorta reminds me of Rush meets Slayer. No Cookie Monster vocals, a la "Cannibal Corpse," et al.

High on Fire features the bassist from Melvins, sounds a lot like that band as a result, and also reminds me a lot of Motorhead.

I wouldn't recommend a lot of new metal, but I was quite the Anthrax/Metallica/Megadeth/JP/Iron Maiden fan way back, and both of these bands appeal to me.

 YMMV.
