Simon Joyner at Paper Sun on Sunday 5/23!
« on: May 21, 2010, 04:40:32 am »
Clavius Productions is extremely proud to present the first DC show since the '90s for Omaha singer-songwriter Simon Joyner. Perhaps known to most as an influence on Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst -- who can only pretend to be a fraction as talented and effective a lyricist and singer -- Joyner's been kicking around since the early '90s with close to a dozen releases on labels such as Jagjaguwar, Secretly Canadian and Team Love. Placing him amongst such hallowed company as Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young and Jackson C. Frank wouldn't be spurious. Come to the new venue Paper Sun in Columbia Heights for a special intimate performance:

Sunday, May 23
Paper Sun
Monroe St., alley between 11th and 13th
$10, all ages
Doors at 7pm, show at 8pm!

Simon Joyner
Pablonius Bill (MD guitar/sax/drums trio)

Simon Joyner (born 1971) is a singer-songwriter from Omaha, Nebraska. Considered by some to be the forefather of the burgeoning Omaha music scene, he has profoundly influenced the music of Bright Eyes. Joyner also collaborated with John Darnielle, of The Mountain Goats, and Beck listed Joyner in his top 10 albums when asked by Rolling Stone. He is also famous for the so-called "Peel Incident," when famous British DJ John Peel played his album The Cowardly Traveller Pays His Toll from beginning to end on air. Simon is named after Paul Simon. Simon lives in Omaha with his wife and three children.

if this person is so great and so influential and so incredible and so talented and so everything anybody could ever want in anything musically related . . . why are they only playing for ten dollars in an alley between eleventh and thirteenth?  somewhere conor is laughing.

DVR it, stupid.
Paper Sun shows end at 10. You will have tons of time to whack it to your TV show like all the  other lemmings later.

why are hippies so dense might be a better question. simon abhors playing in music clubs that mostly exist to rip off the performer, so he prefers to play in houses and alternative spaces where he can get 100% of the door.  simple as that.

decent crowd turned up for this, and it was over by 10:30ish. it was one of the best shows i've seen all year, every bit as intimate as i hoped. simon played a great selection of his catalog and his voice was in top form, as was the instrumental accompaniment.

azaghal, any thoughts?

Pretty much agree. Paper Sun is a really cool space. I hope it sticks around a while. Both gigs I've caught there I've caught there were great experiences. Simon's set was excellent. Seems like a super nice guy, too.
