Wire announce new album in their "Colors" series, Red Barked Tree, due in January

by

Wire, Britain's first "real" punk rock band, have announced that their newest album, titled Red Barked Tree, will be available for mass consumption on January
11 through the band's Pink Flag label. The album, Wire's 12th, is the follow-up to 2008's Object 47 and is further proof that not all bands get worse with
age. Well, at least the bands that weren't shitty to begin with.

The album was written and recorded throughout 2010 and features the slightly-less-than-four trio of Colin Newman, Graham Lewis, and Robert Grey, with the
press release making sure to mention that the recording sessions had "no guests." I guess Wire really want to reinforce the fact that they made this album
as a band, most likely to prove that 40-somethings in a punk band can make good music without the aid of young folk. Or maybe they don't want to admit
who they're friends with??

Regardless of the how or why, the album was created, the guys have put together a good group of songs, and you can even hear one if you want! Yeah! Just
head over to  that less professional site  (Pitchfork) and take a listen to the very cool, very Wire-like "Two Minutes."

David J. (Bauhaus/Love & Rockets) is currently working on getting funds together to release a solo album. Suspect that will be released sometime in 2011.

The Dirtbombs do Detroit Techno

Detroit is due for another revival ever since Jack White left the Motor City for dead or perhaps Detroit does it to itself, but the glaring issue remains
that we must never forget about Detroit. The Dirtbombs' Ultraglide in Black was a retrospective covers celebration of Detroit soul, RB and of course, Motown.
The band is back on its celebration style to resurrect Detroit techno out of its urban decay.

Dirtbombs frontman Mick Collins is a nostalgiaist. In reworking Detroit classics in live instrumentation, his adjustments put little twists on the originals.
For instance, "Shari Vari" sounds less like a fuzzed-out and pulsating rhythm machine and more like a sleek German post-punk track that makes you ponder,
"what if Gang of Four were from Berlin?" Party Store will feature the refashioning of early Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May classics. Carl
Craig even lent modular synthesizer programming to The Dirtbombs' epic 21-minute reworking of "Bug In The Bassbin".

Party Store is out February 1 on
In The Red.

9 tracks through the new Deerhoof record. Boring.

Damn shame. They had a nice run there from Apple O through Friend Opportunity.

I thought this one would be a recovery after the Offend Maggie slip but no luck.

So, the Yuck record is all sorts of fantastic so far.

Like...every great 1990's indie-rockism rolled into one album.

Every time a new Mogwai album comes out, I think "Maybe this is the one that will get me back into bombastic-yet-subtle instrumental post-rock!" and I'm doing it again with 'Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will'. I've only listened to it once but it sounded great. Not sure if it will stick around though.

You can stream the new Decemberist album on NPR's website: http://www.npr.org/2011/01/03/132436422/first-listen-the-decemberists-the-king-is-dead?ps=cprs

Stylistically, it is about the polar opposite of Hazard of Love. This album is much more countryish and sounds kind of like a Neil Young album.
