Why Is This Horoscope Sh1t News?
« on: January 14, 2011, 06:46:29 pm »
Honestly?

I am having trouble remembering a story about legitimate astronomy drawing this much attention from "respectable" news outlets.

I am having trouble remembering a story about legitimate astronomy drawing this much attention from "respectable" news outlets.

There's been plenty of attention towards astronomy. Like that big green mass caught recently, the question of whether or not Pluto is a planet, water on our moon and the moon of other planets, various observations of several more recent closer asteroids and some of the findings on Mars.

What I'm finding a little odd is that other than one person, everyone that I'm seeing talking about this new turn on astrology, none of them seem to believe in or have the slightest interest in astrology's potential legitimacy in the least. I mean, there's at least the slight interest by a whole lot of people for loads of newspapers and websites to post daily horoscopes and astrology books sales tend to do okay. With that said, I've heard and read about this debate before. Nothing new. It's just that the mainstream has decided to pick up on the latest version of this theory.

Here's a photo of the latest astronomical wonder hitting the mainstream:

I'd wish a curse on you that you're professional science type wife kicking your ass tonight except that you'd probably enjoy that!  ::) :-\

^ Nope. Just following Az's lead. Then again, astrology is based on astronomy. Also, Az never actually confused them. He just wondered about the public's interest in one versus the other.

The only one of those that got close to (I still think the astrology thing is getting more coverage) is Pluto.

And no, I am not confusing anything.

There was a New York Times article today, in which astrologers were denying the importance of this, and labeling it as an "attack on astrology" meant to discredit them.   In which sense they were remarkably in step with centuries of reactions by the Catholic Church to science.  With the important difference being that astrologers lack the political clout to order anyone burned at the stake.
