Primavera Sound 2011
« on: February 03, 2011, 02:49:43 pm »
Anyone ever gone to Primavera Sound in Barcelona?

I am strongly considering going this year with some of the recent additions made, but it's a big $$ commitement. Would appreciate any previous experience intel or opinion on this fest that anyone could offer.

PS - Einstruzende Neubauten, Seefeel, and Damo Suzuki in the same place makes me happy.

Make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to explore the wonders of Barcelona and possibly the rest of Spain. No music festival alone is worth the plane ticket price plus hotel charges.

i know that Vas Deferens has been to primavera at least once if not more.  maybe he'll share his insights.

agreed that one should take in spain while there, but i disagree that a festival isn't worth airfare + hotel.   it depends on what your economic and entertainment priorities & resources are.

Joe will undoubtedly be in here momentarily to talk it up. He is the #1 Primavera superfan on this board.

I usually involve music in all of my vacations. I love Spain, so that is a big plus. I did an 18 day trip around Fesitval de Benicassim back in 2003. The trip of a lifetime.

I don't have that kind of free time this time around, but the line-up looks great and being in the heart of such a great city, I am really tempted.

Vas D - So you're a fan of Primavera Sound? How's it stack up against say Coachella or Bonnaroo experience wise?

Hmmm. Barcelona, Tennessee, or the California desert. That's a tough one.  :o

I'm not the #1 Primavera superfan...there's another person here (who doesn't post anymore) who has been to Primavera since its inception.

When I went in 2009, I actually spent less money than what I spent at Coachella 07 because a.) you don't need a car, b.) hotels are cheaper. If you are undecided at this time, you can try to book your flight two or even a week in advance and see what you come up with. In 09, I booked a week prior to the fest and it was around $500 roundtrip.

Setting and weather are perfect. There are 6 stages and one beautiful auditorium that holds 3,000 people for select performances (MBV played one of their 2 shows in the auditorium when I went and this year it will be Sufjan Stevens, Mercury Rev, John Cale and more). There are also pre-shows/after-shows and that's included in the festival pass (this year it will be held at Poble Espanyol instead of the clubs) and there are also preshows at Parc Joan Miro (not sure if they are doing that this year).

I didn't get lucky last year as far as flights due to people flying to Barcelona (fares got too expensive) to avoid the volcano so I had to cancel hotel reservation. I'm going this year, though! (will be there 8 days total)  ;D

Thanks Vas D. Sounds great. Your venue/stage info was very helpful. Now to run it past the wife!

Ha! good luck on that. Forgot to mention that the fest starts around 5 pm each day and ends about 4 or 5 am. The DJ/electronic acts usually play the late sets. The "headliners" play around 8 or 9 pm. Apart from PULP, I'm not sure who they consider as headliners this year. Maybe Grinderman and PJ Harvey.

FIBenacissim was on the same all night schedule and we loved it! Glad to hear Primavera Sound does it that way too.

Final question Vas.

Do you expect that is the full line-up? Or do they roll out announcements in phases?

Got Haggis?

Barcelona is full of thieves - be careful with your belongings....even one in your front pocket!! (my iphone got lifted out of my front pocket last year in Barcelona)
