Cell phone service in Rockville
« on: November 03, 2011, 11:38:22 am »
So I bit the bullet and moved to Rockville. I live on Twinbrook Parkway. Things are good so far, except that my cell phone service is BRUTAL. I average two bars or less at home and usually am no bars or one bar. Cell phone calls are pretty reliable even with few or no bars, but data and web just chug along like molassas. I am a Virgin customer which uses Sprint networks. Things were fine when I lived in the District but now with my cell phone coverage, I might as well be in Damascus. Service also seems alright when I'm at the Metro station or on 355.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be great.

Why did you move? I thought you were a big defender of the greatness of living in DC.

Possible, depending on which side of the Parkway he lives.  But the high rise buildings (if you can call them that) are on the side that's closer to the Pike so one would expect the reception to be just dandy.

howdy neighbor.  i live just up veirs mill.  welcome to the 'hood.  i rented a place on twinbrook pkwy before moving to my current spot.

sprint service is really hot-or-cold in the area.  within a block i'll move from full-bars 3G to two bars analog.  i get the same variability when working from home - exact same spot but varies from day to day.  to be fair i get a lot more 3 or 4 bar days. single/analog days are the exception, but i find it weird that there is any variability at all.

suggestions?  dunno.  i think you can get signal boosters, if you're willing to spend a little (i'm sure smackie can/will lay some knowledge on us).  otherwise, ask your neighbors if they have better signal strength with another carrier, and look into switching.

Yeah, move out of Rockville.

right, to a super cool location like the outer edges of germantown?   ::)

Have a housewarming party.

Find out which of your friends gets the best service at your party and switch to that company.

You should not be with a company that does not meet your needs at the place you use the service most.

i live in an area that has never had cell service and never will, and we like it that way.  no one bugs us on our damn cell phones when we are at home.  we use land lines.  the old ones you have to rotary dial.  in lime green.  yeah.

Why did you move? I thought you were a big defender of the greatness of living in DC.

I was, and remain, a passionate advocate of the District, but I had some shit go down in real life where I didn't have the luxury of an extended, long-term search for new housing, so I had to hustle for the best living situation for my money as quickly as possible and it ended up being in Rockville. As much as I liked SW DC, I wasn't going to overpay to live there or anywhere else in the District. Maybe sometime soon I will move back, but as for right now, Rockville isn't that bad. I have more amenities in walking distance than I ever did in SW and it is nice not sleeping 100 feet from 395 anymore. Although it would be nice being closer to downtown again.

I'm not too hip to only live in DC. I'm too hip to ever live anywhere in VA.

Sweetcell, thanks for suggestions.

You might consider moving elsewhere; that might solve your cellphone problem
