What's with the tribute bands?
« on: November 23, 2011, 10:51:30 am »
There was Super Diamond last week and now we have The Dark Star Orchestra coming up.  Are we turning into the State Theatre?  The bottom line is that these are just cover bands and I like to think of the 9:30 club as a place for bands with original music, not cover bands.

tony, those acts are what i'd call second-tier tribute acts.  they are professionals, they tour constantly, and as far as the club is concerned they draw decent crowds.  these aren't garage bands or bar regulars who learned to maul "stairway to heaven" and "black dog".

both super diamond and BSO hit the club about once a year, but other than that michael jackson tribute act that comes through i can't think of any other cover bands that play the 930.  three a year is acceptable, just a coincidence that we had two of them so close together.  hang in there.

I nominate Sweetcell for 930 Club/IMP spokesperson.

One of my favorite shows at the 930 was the Silver Beats... just wish they'd made it back before breaking up.

Yes.  Indeed.  I will use Mastodon as my antidote.

You're also forgetting Tragedy (The Bee Gee cover band) which is the same guys who do the MJ tribute. Who also are a few members of 2 Skinnee J's. Plus Misstallica (same girls that also do Iron Madians and Queen Diamond ) have played the club

I vote for more tribute bands:

I remember when I was I think 15 years old I saw another VH tribute band, Diver Down at the Bayou and even got on stage to played drums for "Ice Cream Man" with them.
