What happened to movie soundtracks?  They used to rule in the 90s and even a tiny bit into the 2000s, but now???

I am talking about soundtracks like Clerks, Trainspotting, the Crow, Spawn, Demon Knight, High Fidelity, Velvet Goldmine, Garden State, Singles, Reality Bites, Blade 1 and 2, Judgement Night, CB4, Pulp Fiction, Natural Born Killers, Lost Highway, Love and a 45, Empire Records, Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums...

Natural Born Killers is the best soundtrack ever... as you know Trent Reznor created it...

NBK had (I skipped a few tracks here):

Leonard Cohen ? "Waiting for the Miracle" (My introduction to Leonard Cohen)
L7 ? "Shitlist" (my introduction to L7)
Patti Smith ? "Rock N Roll ____" (Flood Remix) (my introduction to Patti)
Cowboy Junkies ? "Sweet Jane" (Great song.   I love the dialogue from the movie)
Bob Dylan ? "You Belong to Me"  One of the only Dylan songs that I like (though probably because of   this movie)
Nine Inch Nails ? "Burn" (great song)
Patsy Cline ? "Back in Baby's Arms" (not my thing but good song)
Nine Inch Nails ? "Something I Can Never Have" (Edited And Extended) (Another great nin song)
Juliette Lewis ? "Born Bad"
Dr. Dre ? "The Day the ____ Took Over" (good Dre track.  awesome use of it in the movie)
Lard ? "Forkboy" (awesomeness)
Nine Inch Nails ? "A Warm Place"
Leonard Cohen ? "The Future" (Again, my introduction to Leonard Cohen)
Tha Dogg Pound ? "What Would U Do?" (straight up dope ass 90s west coast flavor)

To you it might be whatever, I do not know, but to me, the soundtrack and movie, were very influential.

Lard ? "Forkboy" (awesomeness).
one of Al's best side projects only to be rivaled by 1000 Homo Djs and Pailhead

L7 ? "Shitlist"
my favorite L7 moment it's their portrayal of the band "Camel Lips" in Serial Mom

Napster, etc. Soundtrack albums are expensive to make, so they need to sell a lot of copies to at least break even.

I know... There are a lot of factors.  I was more rhetorically lamenting the loss of that medium.

How did I forget Brainscan???

1.     Grease Box - Tad
2.   Under My Skin - Dandelion
3.   Shapes - Alcohol Funnycar
4.   Welcome to this World - Primus
5.   Freak Now - Old
6.   Make it Now - Mudhoney
7.   Leave Me Alone - Butthole Surfers
8.   Triad - Pitchshifter
9.   Thunder Kiss '65 - White Zombie
10.   Riverboat - Stuttering John
11.   Main Title - George S. Clinton

These were such a good way for a young me to hear a lot of bands for cheap during that era.

I also would use CMJ magazine/CD to find new bands, and BMG/Columbia House to buy different things I would read about or that would sound cool (my cousin would notoriously order random stuff off of Columbia House based on artwork and band name, like the Pork Soda album by Primus).  We live in different times for sure.
