2014 Q1

EMA "The Future's Void": solid B, but she'll always be living in the shadow of "Past Life Martyred Saints"

Sun Kil Moon "Benji": culmination of 25 years of work for Kozolek, his crowning achievement

Drive-By Truckers "English Oceans": I love DBT, but ... eh. Jason Isbell's "Southeastern" blows this completely out of the water.

The War on Drugs "Lost in the Dream": most listenable album of the year.

Darkside "Psychic": Yes, please.

I totally agree, DBT was always off my radar for some reason, but friend of mine told me I could have a tix to the (then) upcoming Isbell show and promptly bought Southeastern and have been enjoying it ever since.
Great show at the 930 too.

Really liking the Broods Ep

Southeastern is a snoozer....I sold my copy...its just too depressing for me... I don't need that....

I bet the show was great though..... he's a talented songwriter for sure..comes from good musical stock too...

but Southeastern just doesn't rock enough....for me.....its all personal taste at the end of the day but I think Southeastern is one of those albums that is a critics favorite this year but will end up collecting dust at the end of the day...

You can make a highly personal depressing album like Blood on the Tracks but still have it have enough songs with some tempo....Bob realized this which is why he recut the album...the original BOTT is slow and lacks tempo...he scratched it and went back in with different musicians and recut it and at the end of the day for all the people that ballyhoo what didn't come out what did come out is far more immediate

did anybody talk about the new afghan whigs album, 'do the beast', after, what, like sixteen years or something.  i have never, actually, listened to the afghan whigs, but i heard one of the new songs  today . . . and i liked it.

I was never really a fan of Afghan Whigs, for no good reason, but I did catch their Coachella set on line this past weekend.  i thought they were really good.

Really bummed I did not get tix to the Ottobar show but I do want to give them a try.  Is Gentlemen the right place to start?

I'm probably in the minority, but 1965 is really the album that hooked me... but I celebrate their entire catalog.
