D.C. Cracks Down on Clubs

RIP Platinum ... when i first came to this fair city you were just opening as a beacon for douchebags aged 18-20 (i love how its described as "once trendy") ... i truly can't believe they've been open for so long

Club owners have raised questions about the increased enforcement. The city would be better served, they say, by having investigators work with owners when problems arise.

Yeah right. If by "work with" they mean "take our bribes."

thanks jim graham for closing down all the clubs.. great work!

i actually wrote him last year about not penalizing black cat and 930 because he was supposedly going to try and ban all ages show at these clubs because of minors supposedly being served alcohol..

i think closing down clubs is the wrong approach....i mean if there's one shooting outside a club now its like the club is held accountable and closed or run through the ringer.. a fight or two and you have to close for a month?? how does that make sense... there is a presumption that clubs/bars are bad things and i think thats really silly

Voluntarily being used loosely. The owner has already dropped a lot of money into the old Hecht's building to turn that into a huge club. However, he's not allowed to have more than one liquor license at a time which means his other club H20 will be closing down when their lease is up.

It would be sweet if the space where Platinum was went back to being the Fifth Column!!!  ;)

And Hutch, Jim Graham wasn't targeting just the 930 Club and Black Cat but rather ANY club in DC to make them 21 and over. This would include dance clubs that are 18 and over as well as live music venues.

Sometimes I think clubs are punished incorrectly. Just because something happens outside or in the vicinity of a club doesn't mean the trouble was from the club. An example would be, one night a large group of people ran into another group of people and an altercation broke out in the parking lot next to Bohemian Caverns. You can bet that fingers were pointed at the club, however, none of the people involved had even stepped foot into Bohemian Caverns. They also do not own the parking lot next door, therefore, it becomes the city's problem and policing becomes the issue.

If you mean the one from the 80s when it was down at Buzzard's Point, then yes, otherwise it's not possible since the SE location is no longer there. At least with Platinum the building is still standing  :p

you know, a lot of fights break out at school yards and playgrounds.  they all need to be shut down too.  why isn't city council taking action against these pits of festering violence?

They are also cracking down on getting outta here for the weekend.

 Got this email today...

 Greetings,

We are contacting you as a past passenger on a DC2NY bus on the Washington DC New York City corridor. We wanted you to be aware of a proposed change that the city of Washington is making. They are forcing all the intercity buses to move their pick-up and drop off locations to 10th Street SW, beneath the L'Enfant Promenade, this would not be a convenient location for any of our DC2NY guests. The city has cited that the bus companies have been blocking traffic, sidewalks and entrances to businesses, however none of these accusations apply to our locations. Additionally we carefully chose the Dupont Circle area as a safe location allowing most of you convenient access to your homes and destinations.

Naturally, we are urging the city to approve our current stop locations as "designated intercity bus zones", but we need your support. We have already heard from some of you, but now is the time to let your opinions be known. Would you please consider sending a letter to support us in our quest to allow us to be able to serve you from our current locations. Please address your emails to Karina Ricks, the Associate Director, District Department of Transportation at karina.ricks@dc.gov. It would be helpful to copy Mr. Emeka Moneme, the Director at: Emeka.moneme@dc.gov.

Please also copy the following city council members as they are members of the committee on Public Works and the Environment:

 Councilman Jack Evans: jackevans@dccouncil.us
 Councilman Kwame Brown: kbrown@dccouncil.us
 Councilman Jim Graham: jgraham@dccouncil.us
 Councilwoman Mary Cheh: mcheh@dccouncil.us
 Councilwoman Muriel Bowser: mbowser@dccouncil.us
 Councilwoman Yvette Alexander: yalexander@dccouncil.us

Please be sure to copy us here at info@dc2ny.com and we want to thank you very much for your support and patronage. Hopefully with your support we will be able to remain in our current safe and convenient locations.

I miss the Fifth Column, Back Alley, Poseurs, East Side, Tracks, and WUST!   Oh yes, and Dakota, particularly the Clockwork nights Larry used to run there.
