"In fact Momentary Lapse's not-so secret intention was to return Pink Floyd to a time when Waters was not the band's sole creative force. If this goal aggrandizes Gilmour's own role, then the results do not. For with Gilmour as far from his creative peak as Waters, and Mason's and Wright's contributions nominal, Momentary Lapse's attempts to revisit Wish You Were Here rarely get closer than mere wishing. ALternately twinkling and glowering in the woefully optimistic hope that it's being atmospheric, Momentary Lapse is certainly intangible and evanescent, but only in a bad way - being vague, insubstantial and bland. Just add 1980s production bombast for that nasty hole-in-the-middle effect. "On The Turning Away" is portentous supermarket-aisle folk. "Dogs of War" is a synthetic pub-rock plod, with Gilmour's throaty singing making him sound like someone bellowing about nothing. "One Slip" is U2lite arena rock, courtesy of another 1980s casualty, Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera, further stymied by some vile slap-bass from Waters' sub Guy Pratt. You can practically hear the double thumbs-up from the control room. The glitz and glamour-obsessed 1980s seemed to prematurely age people: Gilmour sounds like a man hopelessly lost in the Linn drum department at Curry's."
