vinyl storage?
« on: August 30, 2016, 02:13:58 pm »
Has anyone tried the bins that fit into the Kallax system at IKEA? I'm looking for vinyl storage that allows me to flip through my records and isn't 4,000. Has anyone used them? Or do I just need to get over it and store my vinyl like books?

i would prefer to flip, but i think the bins would take up space that would make flipping challenging and frustrating.
the kallax are attractive and sturdy. and inexpensive. nice calm colors.
5 years ago i bought the exhibit 5×5.
that thing was a beast to assemble and lift into place, but it looks really nice and does the job (birch effect color).
shot an entire day waiting for them to deliver it, however.
but no way was it gonna fit in my car.
and you better believe those guys brought that thing down to the basement.
and yes, i gave them a cold soda.

I had a bin from the old Tower Records in Rockville that allowed me to flip thru them. Took up way too much space. Now have the ikea bookshelf things. Much happier.

In one of GBV's box sets there were pictures of Bob Pollard's basement ("The Monument Club") and he basically had a record store down there so you could flip...even had dividers I think.... I thought that was cool as shit.. maybe someday I can get there..right now I have three of the biggest expedit units, a 2X4 expedit (I think this one is the least stable but I may have built it wrong).. two of the 2X2 expedits and a bunch of bookshelves..

I am amazed at how expensive some of the record crates are... I saw a crossley one at Barnes and Noble yesterday for like $40.....of course who wants a crossley anything...

Flipping would be very nice but, yeah, it takes up a ton of space. Kallax are pretty much the go-to shelves nowadays for vinyl (and their Gnedby towers for CDs).

When Tower Rockville closed I snagged one of their shopping baskets for a dime.

Took a hammer to it and off to the dump it went.

No logos, unfortunately.  Was given to me by a former Tower employee. Was nice to have but impractical.

Meant to add that I have a friend with a pair of nice Peaches crates that I'd love to steal someday.  They're used to store towels or something  :-\

Those crates are cute, but I'm over having crates on the floor.

Looks like it's going to be Kallax!

I did also find an LP BinE, which I think I might almost get to keep on the entertainment center next to the turntable for a currently listening slot.

Boltz makes a nice stand, too, but it's pricey.

Ikea is the way to go. Wish they'd kept the original design, tho.
