I know nothing abotu Nadja, but Akron/Family live is a hoot, so that gets my nod of shame.

I, also, would STRONGLY vote for Akron/Family.

I could see Nadja being up your alley based on past music-related posts of yours.

The recently reissued Bliss Torn from Emptiness is a good starting point I think.

 Edit: That was to relaxer.

Thanks for the recommend, I'm on it.

Still vote for Akron. If you haven't heard 'Love is Simple', you should check it out.

I have and I like it a lot.

 Leaning more towards Akron now.

Might be a different story if it were on a friday or saturday due to Velvet's tendency to go super late.

ok, so i'm biased because i'm putting on the show, but i would go with nadja.

 1) the velvet lounge is a better place to see a show than jammin' java. unless you love coffee and hanging out in suburban parking lots.

 2) i've seen akron/family three times, and i feel that each show was regressively worse. i like them most when they play a concise/compact 45-minute set, not two-plus-hours of meandering, uninspired, sub-allman brothers jamming. and i usually like meandering jamming, just not uninspired. i was really bored after they played for an hour the last time i caught them.

 3) akron/family will be around and will come through dc soon enough. nadja has never been here and doesn't tour as much.

 4) aidan played my house last year and it was amazing. nadja will be even better.

 5) the openers are fantastic: ami dang, from baltimore, plays sitar, and pacific before tiger does minimal ambient drone in the vein of stars of the lid/brian eno.

 6) the velvet lounge needs your money more than jammin' java does   :p

All very valid and convincing points.

The new Aidan solo EP is great by the way.

 Still so torn...

Snailhook, any chance of your making the trip up to NYC for Boris/Growing tonight?

we're in the process of overhauling the website at this very moment, so it has not been updated yet. i hope to get it up there later today. nadja was a last-minute confirmation last week.

azaghal, i just came back from nyc -- saw roky erickson and thurston moore at webster hall -- so i can't go back so soon. gotta see the debate/convocation show tonight at velvet. i'm sure boris will be back, and i have been talking to growing about coming to dc in a few months.

When was the last time you went to Jammin' Java?

two or three years ago, i saw john renbourne & jacqui mcshee of pentangle. i have gone there four times, usually when some britisk folkies like the strawbs or martin carthy roll through town.

why? is it not a coffeehouse located in a strip mall anymore?

They now have a full bar in addition to the coffee and have done some rearranging, it feels a lot more like a club now than it did before. Personally I appreciate being able to park right out front in a well-lighted lot, especially when travelling solo.
