I just got it today ... and WOW, these guys are really good ... i haven't heard such a solid fusion of a "modern rock" sound with "indie rock" in a long time ... i could see them making it big, they have an interesting but accessible sound and can really write hooks and songs

all the smashing pumpkins comparisons i've seen are right on point ... maybe the sound isn't exactly the same, but they're doing the same thing the pumpkins did in the early 90s:  take ideas and sonics from indie rock and make them accessible with arena type songs

 ok, enough gushing [/b]
and have you noticed that even their names are eerily similar?   :)

i bet $100 that if you played Carnavas for someone who didnt know the Pickups, you could sell it as that comeback album Corgan has been talking about.

they would believe you and they would love it.

its cool that finally the kids of the 90s have bands recreating the sounds of the bands they grew up on (i am a bit young to remember Joy Division, the Clash and Sabbath)

there really wasnt a better album in the 90s than Siamese Dream was there?

Y'know, normally I go very easily for this kind of music, but thus far, it hasn't done anything for me at all. I've listened to it while biking, playing online poker, while working, and it just isn't sinking in. Maybe it'll be one of those that just doesn't happen, doesn't happen, doesn't happen, and then all of a sudden, there it is, like acid.

luckily for you, the Pickups won't be playing DAR (insert yet another rant from me about DAR sounding just fine if you have decent seats).  the show with OK Go and Snow Patrol is at Bender Arena (AU University).  reviews/comments about sound there is mixed, and it's general admission.  still skipping?

Silversun Pickups recently played a show in Philly with Dead Meadow and Wolfmother.  Too bad we didn't get that triple-bill.

hey, it happens ... what i was really trying to say is that i was really impressed by it on an objective level, that they did a great job with the sound and could go really far ... in addition to that, i really personally liked the album as well, but probably not more than others good ones i've heard this year

it's kind of sad that i can get so excited about something on an objective level, if that makes any sense

I think that makes a lot of sense. I love the Sword and Priestess on an objective level because someone is making current, fun metal that piles on the riffs. Too many of the current metal bands sound like a screamy, speed metal version of Rush.

If you want to stick with it, I would recommend their EP - Pikul, released last year.

It's only $35 - I had thought it was a lot more expensive, but then it wasn't, so I bought a ticket yesterday.  I'm mostly going for SSPU, because I just saw OK Go and Snow Patrol seem pretty boring live.  So they better play more than six songs   :p

No there wasn't.

But I maintain that if Melancholy.... had been a single disc instead of that inflated Billy Corgan double disc ego trip, the right 12 songs on one disc could have been the seminal album of the 90's.
