Michael owned 1982-1984

This is about the entire decade.

Post Bad, Janet was the Jackson who mattered.

That’s true

If we could vote for a Michael/Janet tandem I might agree!

With regards to Peter Gabriel owning the 80s, I had a longer rant in mind... But, I'll just leave this iconic movie scene here instead.

The Style Council was an amazing group of musicians who weren't tied to any one genre of music and could easily move between jazz, soul and pop.  Their sound is timeless and they managed some truly memorable songs along the way.  They influence many people to explore music beyond the sound of The Jam.

XTC released an amazing streak of records in the 80s.  English Settlement > Mummur > The Big Express >  25 O' Clock > Skylarking > Psonic Psunspot > Oranges and Lemons

While XTC may not be a directly mentioned influence, they sure do get the tribute treatment often enough.

While I definitely agree with your sentiments, and for me personally they (at least XTC) was a major group for me in the 80's, I would argue 90% of the numbnuts out there couldn't recognize either as a musical group, let alone name 1 song.

Dear God  ;D
even that is a stretch ....
one great fucking song, but probably less 0.1% of Americans could identify the band of that song (hmm do we thing there are 300k people who could name XTC in the US???...might be .01%)
hardly ownership on any level

I do think you are confusing 'Ownership' with bands you like

I've always thought that when we see someone in the wild who we *suspect* is a boardie, the secret question should be, "Hey, are you a friend of Kosmo Vinyl?".  Anyone not in the inner circle will be completely dumbfounded.

Unless they are aware who the real Kosmo Vinyl is.

Having a song on a sountrack of a movie that grossed a whole 21.5 million at box office isn't really owning the decade.
