It could soon be 9:30, again
The owners of the 9:30 Club are setting the stage for a planned replica of the nightclub’s original home at 930 F St. NW, which shuttered in December 1995 to make way for its current space at 815 V St. NW.
Representatives for I.M.P. have submitted plans to the D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs for the remake at 2047 9th St. NW, the former Satellite Room located behind the club’s current location. The plans show a three-story, nearly 7,900-square-foot building. The venue, to include a nearly 2,000-square-foot rooftop, is slated to hold nearly 480 people. I.M.P. hopes to complete the roughly $5.3 million project in time for an opening act in September 2023, per DCRA permit info.
Word of the 9:30 Club replica was revealed by rockstar Dave Grohl on stage during a Foo Fighters show in September 2021 that was part of the nightclub’s reopening week after a pandemic-related closure. At the time, representatives for I.M.P. declined to disclose additional details, according to DCist.
Audrey Fix Schaefer, a spokeswoman for I.M.P., declined to comment on the plans for this article.
An I.M.P. affiliate, It’s Mine Now LLC, acquired the single-story, 2,361-square-foot former Satellite Room building for $2.5 million in 2006, according to the D.C. Recorder of Deeds. The Satellite Room, from owners Ian and Eric Hilton, announced its planned closure in December 2019 due to a lease termination, per DCist.
It’s Mine Now has assembled a team including Core Architecture + Design Inc., Bohler D.C., Rathgeber-Gross Associates and New York acoustical engineering firm Walters-Storyk Design Group to design, build out and soundproof the space.
That last piece is of note given the site’s location. While it’s adjacent to the 9:30 Club to the south, it will be next to a planned development by MRP Realty slated to include a 10-story, 312-unit apartment building with about 5,178 square feet of ground-floor retail. MRP Managing Principal Bob Murphy said he believes the replica will be a positive addition to the neighborhood.
“We’re excited about the use and the replica — another awesome amenity in Shaw,” Murphy said in an email.
