Bragg is back!
Interesting maneuver to avoid controversy, but give the base some juicy red meat:
secDef renamed Fort Liberty Fort Roland Bragg (not after the Confederate general)
The base’s original namesake, Gen. Braxton Bragg, was a Confederate general from Warrenton, North Carolina, who was known for owning slaves and losing key Civil War battles, contributing to the Confederacy’s downfall.
Private First Class Roland L. Bragg, who he said was a World War II hero who earned the Silver Star and the Purple Heart for his exceptional courage during the Battle of the Bulge.
So it got named after some virtually unknown soldier, based only on that his name was the same as the Confederate General
