I’m just wondering if it’s straight up impotence or total powerlessness. A public congressional hearing where - for example -someone in Commerce has to address 25% tariffs for 43 lbs of fentanyl would have value

It’s hard to accept but we are in a weird situation where our best hope is to let them screw up and hope the American people at some point say enough. Easy to say but hard to accept when one is part of the collateral damage.

At this point only democrats seem to give a shit. The rest seem mostly asleep or indifferent. If you look at Trump’s popularity in surveys he has only lost a few points….

The long term damage is to our democratic institutions, norms and principles in addition to our loss of our identity. When the Statue of Liberty represents welcoming multi millionaires and kicking out war refugees we are no longer the ideal of America. Arguably we haven’t been for a while and it’s all a little bit of a fairytale we tell ourselves and the world but we are now so far from it it’s hard to envision coming back. We have become what we spent 250 years railing against.

The back and forth on tariffs is insane. Not even a banana republic operates in this manner.

who's the problem here?
You know mexico is 3.5 times bigger in population than our 51st state
so the apples to apples comparison is over 150 LBs !

indeed, 150 vs. 21148 is completely different than 48 vs. 21148.  in that light, 25% tariffs, tanking the stock market and kicking off a recession is totally justified!

They want a recession. They can blame it on Biden and they must be banking on it restricting demand and leading to less inflation. All before the midterms.

This is where something like public hearings creating an official record would be useful

Don't like when someone insists you must follow the law...fire them!

The government watchdog who has been getting federal workers temporarily reinstated after arguing their terminations were illegal will be fired and removed from office, a federal appeals court has ruled.

the alternative is to realize that size of the population has very little to do with how much drugs makes it across the border, and that length of border is much more relevant:
US/MX border = 3,145 kilometers*
CA/US border = 8,891 kilometers*

so apples to apples would be less than 17 pounds.

yet another alternative: number of border crossing points
US/MX border = 50
CA/US border = 120

so oranges to oranges would be 20 pounds

still: tank the economy!!!

* note the use of REAL UNITS OF MEASUREMENT, based on science and not some monarch's body part

question for the parliamentarians: can hearings be called without the consent of the party in the majority?  in other words, can the Dems force hearings to be held if the Repubs don't want them?  couldn't the GOP just shut dat down?  don't those usually come out of a committee or sub-committee, which are all controlled by GOP?

my understanding is it's fairly easy for them to stop anything the dems propose
That's why having the majority of the house gives you the rights to do things like that as well as subpoena people

reporter: "your foreign affairs minister yesterday called all of this a psychodrama.  how do you characterize this?"

trudeau: "thursday"

lol.  gawd i love the quotes and quips coming from north of the border.  trudeau is really stepping up to the plate... too bad we're about to lose him.  hopefully the next guy will be just as strong and focused.
