German Photographers to Boycott Dylan Tour

HAMBURG (Billboard) - Photojournalists in Germany have announced plans to boycott Bob Dylan (news)'s upcoming tour of the country, after he stated that he would not allow his photograph to be taken during performances. The photographers are considering the same action against other international stars.

At its latest gathering on Friday in Berlin, the German Assn. of Journalists called on its more than 41,000 members to boycott Dylan's Oct 17-Nov. 8 tour, as well as those by major acts such as Peter Gabriel (news), Paul McCartney (news), Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses and the Kelly Family.

The association's managing director, Thomas Schelberg, says photographers are increasingly facing restrictions imposed by artists and their management over the types of photos they can take during concerts and how the images can be used.

"The freedom of photographic journalists to pursue their profession is more important than Bob Dylan's personal preferences," says a spokesperson for the group.

A spokesman for Cologne-based concert promoter Peter Rieger, which is handling Dylan's tour, says it is no secret that the artist does not allow his concerts to be filmed or photographed. "If the artist doesn't want any photos taken, our hands are tied, and we have to accept this," he says.

What good does it do them to 'boycott' taking pictures at shows because the artists won't let them take pictures?  I'm missing something, right?

It's the artists' mistake; instead of lovely and exhilarating professional photos of their concerts, there will be all the more horrid paparazzi shots with dribble rolling down their chins and red-eye.

Personally,I think it should be up to the artist. The media these days have gone too far,too far I say.I know some would say that's the price you pay for celebrity status, but I honestly wouldn't wish stalking and general harrassment on anybody. Some artists just want to perform, not pose(notice I said some)   :D

i think this just proves the point that german nationals in any line of work just hate americans (except david hasselhoff).  just kidding. anyways, i just think it's funny that some dude's journalistic freedom is apparantly defined by his ability to photograph one guy.  there's really no principle there as far as i'm concerned because you gotta take newsworthy priority into major consideration.  bob dylan just don't really make it into the "worth it to bitch about my freedom" category of newsworthiness.
now it would be cool if he could make an exhibition of pictures of all the young hipster fans during the concert all serious and paying attention like "this is a real moment" juxtaposed with some picture of dylan with a maniacal smile diving naked into a roomfull of gold coins like at the beginning of Duck Tales. (by the by, if he really did this, i would change my aforementioned opinion about bob dylan's position on the objective scale of newsworthiness)

"The freedom of photographic journalists" - must be in the German Constitution because I've never heard of it.

So the people who can't take pictures aren't going to go - that was sort of the point, wasn't it?  A job well done by the Dylan camp.
