Mono roll call
« on: April 11, 2005, 08:25:00 pm »
so who out there is coming to the warehouse to see mono? if you plan on coming, that's great, if not, maybe i can persuade you by telling you that you would dig them if you like any of these bands:

 mogwai
 explosions in the sky
 godspeed you black emperor
 tone
 sonic youth
 glenn branca
japanese rock (for the dude that needs to see more of that)

mono is loud and come up with melodies as striking and beautiful as explosions in the sky. the drummer sometimes plays a glockenspiel during their quiet moments. their newest record on temporary residence was one of my favorites of the year.

the opener, eluvium, is also on temporary residence and is a one-man "band" from portland, oregon. he plays blissed-out ambient drone very tastefully done.

i'll try to put up more info but i just got back from the west coast and have lots of stuff to catch up on.

Distance, how was the turnout at the nanci? I told a bunch of my friends in rva to go but I haven't heard back from anyone on it yet so I'm assuming they pussied out.

I cant wait for Mono tomorrow (Eluvium too) as well as Melt Banana on thurs. Should be a fulfilling week .

despite living here basically my whole life, that's only my 2nd show @ twisters (or whatever it happens to be called on a given month).. i think there were less people there tonight than were there for american analog set/her space holiday that i went to about 3 years ago there.  of course last time i saw mono in richmond (in 2002) there were only 30-40 people at the show... so a lot better than that.  there were a good number of people there, but i wouldn't say it was packed. i have no idea of the capacity of the club though.

tonight's set was 56:42.858 according to my calculations  :)

if they're playing at 11:15 i seriously might be able to make this if i'm not too tired.  maybe i can find someone to ride up with me.
 hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

just got back... never heard of the opener before, but he was pretty nice (eluvium). walked in about halfway thru his set.. talked to bass player from mono for a few minutes, and was surprised to find out she had set aside an XL shirt for me (i had written them an email asking if they could bring some on this tour-- they always seem to have Small and Medium only.)

anyways i recorded the show on my Hi-MD. will get it online sometime soon.

I really wanted to see Mono but just couldn't wait because of the really late start. Eluvium was great; it's amazing what one person can do with a single instrument and a delay pedal.

This was my first time at Warehouse and it certainly had a "Metro Cafe" vibe. Pretty good sound for a venue that fits about 100-125. It was nice not having to deal with smoke but there was no air circulation which made standing around quite uncomfortable.

sorry about the wait and the late start...it was all due to mono taking an extremely long soundcheck. they were adamant about getting the sound perfect and i don't think they understood that the local transportation closes at midnight. they ended up playing from 11:50-12:45.

they did sound pretty damn good, though.

Sucks I missed them too; I was highly impressed by their set at Artomatic one year.
